Portmeirion Home & Gifts Pimpernel Earth Slate Placemats, Set of 6, 30.5 x 23cm

I almost didn't buy these based on other reviews. These are actually well made cork-backed placemats with a wipe clean surface that happens to be a slate pattern - they are not slate but this is clearly stated in the product description. I think they are reasonably priced and the colours suit my kitchen. I wouldn't put something straight out on the oven on them but then why would I? there are other more suitable mats for this.

I bought these to blend with other slate elements we have in the kitchen and they do resemble slate (or at least 2 of the designs do - I think the 3rd is a little poor). I've had this make before and they do last really well - these ones have a thicker board than our previous ones, which makes them feel more sturdy, and quality-wise, they seem an improvement, so I think you will only replace them when you want a new design, rather than through wear and tear. The top board was slightly damaged when I received them - a small dent that I assume was made during transit, so do look carefully before opening.

The coating was already coming off the edge of one mat, straight out of the box, not a good sign for long term future use. Sent back to Amazon with their excellent return policy and refunded.

Be careful to read the item description properly. These placemats are made of wood with a cork backing, not slate. They are, none-the-less, rather nice though.

Excellent placemats. Unique and intriguing design. Well made. We are California residents. Love the size. US products are way too big for our table. Delighted these ship to us here.

I was very sad to find that these were luncheon sized; not remotely suitable for dinner placement. They are beautiful, and normal quality for Pimpernel, just ... WRONG SIZE.

Very pretty and well made; however, they are indeed quite small-- 12" x 9" -- barely large enough for a salad plate service. They also have a pronounced off-gas that is very unpleasant. I am returning them reluctantly, and would definitely buy these in a larger size. At this size they could be quite useful under a plant, lamp or art to protect wood furniture, but they are a bit pricey.
