Stiefel Labs was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline in July 2009 to create a new specialist dermatology business. Glaxo, I gather by their actions, was uninterested in the soap business, likely due to lower margins and competition. Availability of Stiefel Labs ZNP Bar ceased shortly after the acquisition. They also discontinued SASid (their Salicylic Acid and Sulfur soap), Acne-Aid, and their Sulfur Soap. PanOxyl (the BPO cleansing bar) went into short supply in 2012. Zeasorb was discontinued in the UK in 2013. And the formula for the PanOxyl foaming wash was changed in 2018 leading to increased dissatisfaction. When I first wrote my response to this question in 2015 there were 3 makers of a product similar to the original ZNP Bar - Noble Formula, DermaZinc, and DermaHarmony. Fast forward 3 years and we've gone from 3 makers of Pyrithione Zinc Soap/Cleanser to 6. Only 2 makers so far have sought FDA approval for selling OTC Pyrithione Zinc Soap with drug claims - DermaHarmony and Vanicream. The other manufactures (Noble Formula, DermaZinc, MedicalMomma, and Burke) are marketing a non-OTC product. OTC Products have a higher quality standard than non-OTC products. The original Stiefel Labs ZPN Bar was soap. Vanicream's Z-Bar is not soap. It is a SynDet bar (synthetic detergent).

Are the soap bars packaged in plastic?

Yes, The pictures show how they are packaged. I didn't see anything inferior in the packaging. It is a good product.

Is this soap made in the usa?

Yes, the soap is made in the United States. Let's go a bit deeper. The Palm and Coconut oil is imported and mixed with domestically sourced lye to make soap noodles (a blend of sodium palmate, sodium cocoate, and sodium palm kernelate which comes from mixing oils with lye). Since the oil is transformed into the blend here in America, the ingredients are considered made in America. The glycerin is a byproduct of making the noodles and it is made during our noodle process. The Pyrithione Zinc is made here in America. The Oatmeal, Vitamin E, and Table Salt also come from the USA. The Salt of Pentetic Acid (pentasodium pentetate) and the Titanium Dioxide is only imported when domestic ingredients are not available. These are minor ingredients making up less than 2% of the finished soap. The polypropylene film, printing ink, and the actual printing (which is done in Iowa) are domestic. Made in USA means that “all or virtually all” the product has been made in America. That is, all significant components, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Our 2% Pyrithione Zinc soap meets the Made in USA standard. Our products that do not use the qualified claim "Made in USA of U.S. and imported components" claim.
