Tyranny of Dragons (D&D Adventure Book – combines Hoard of the Dragon Queen + The Rise of Tiamat)

Hardcopy dnd books aren't necessary anymore, but I really like having them. The book is really well presented and is of a solid quality. I love the artwork in the books. The story itself is good, but I wouldn't recommend it for a first time DM due to the slight sandbox nature of the structure and loose framework...the book as written really does give you a lot of artistic license for the story.The maps you get in the book are sub-par, and I would recommend finding player made ones online instead of trying to use them.

As an early product in fifth edition D&D, this does need some DM-focused prep in order to run effectively in 2023. However that being said, this would be great for inexperienced players with an experienced DM to run. If you enjoy tweaking stories and adding your own flair, this is an ideal product for you. As a stand-alone, run-from-the-book adventure, it sits in the middle.

As I own both the original books that this one was amalgamated from, I felt disappointed with the content and layout. I couldn’t find any real improvement and felt a bit let down. I knew that this was a reprint but if you have bought both Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat, I wouldn’t bother.

Leí demasiada polémica respecto a este libro.Muchos pensaron que habían sacado algo nuevo, cuando realmente es solo una conjunción de dos libros, que vendrían siendo Hoard of the Dragon Queen y The Rise of Tiamat. Este libro contiene ambos en combinado y viene con unos cuantos arreglos. En lo personal adquirí este libro como un suplemento de ideas y colección, esta es una aventura larga, hablamos de una partida de nivel 1-15 y a mi parecer no es recomendada como una aventura para Dungeon Master novatos. Aunque con paciencia se puede llevar bien la campaña, después de todo, uno como DM tiene el poder de cambiar detalles sobre la marcha. Algo hermoso que tiene el libro de manera añadida es un arte adicional, que si bien muchas de estas imágenes son como compilados de otras versiones viejas no se desprecia.En resumen:Si ya tienes los primeros dos libros que mencione, este libro es una perdida de tiempo para ti. Pues vas a tener lo que ya tienes en un solo libro, eso y un extra.Si aun no tienes alguna de las aventuras que mencione esto es básicamente un 2x1 con una preciosa portada nueva y unos cuantos extras.

I was super excited to get this book, and even more excited to hear that the adventures had been adjusted and rebalanced to help newer DMs. The cover is incredible and really speaks to the stakes of the adventure. I love the addition of concept art and locations in the back of the books, but I believe some or all of it appeared in the older reprint of the adventures. As for he balanced/updated adventures... I can't really tell a difference. I mainly bought this book as Rise of Tiamat has been out of print for quite a while. I would have to pull out the original Hoard of the Dragon queen and closely examine each book to notice differences. I can say that from what I've read, most of the text is word for word from the previous adventures. I didn't dig deeply into the encounters, but they look very similar as well.So... the big takeaway. If you are an experienced DM and lucky enough to have these books on their own already, I would not recommend picking this up. You aren't getting enough new content to justify a purchase. HOWEVER... if you are a new DM (or one of us who weren't so lucky as to pick these books up sooner), THIS IS A MUST HAVE. The art looks incredible. The pages have been changed from the thicker, heavier pages of the original modules to match the quality of recent material. There are additions meant to direct newer Dungeon Masters and prepare them for running a pre-written module, similar to the adventures in the starter kit.These adventures were the first published material for 5th addition, and with this updating (and a little elbow grease from a hard-working DM), this could be an unforgettable campaign for your party.
