A great potty training book
A great book for teaching toddlers about potty training. We read this for weeks on the lead up to potty training.

Princess [ugh] Polly's Potty!
I was a bit dubious about buying Princess Polly's Potty due to the slightly cringeworthy gender stereotyping of blue 'Pirate Pete' for boys and pink 'Princess Polly' for girls, as we try our best not to ram home the pretty pink princess idea with everything we buy for our daughter (2.5 years). However, the time to potty train presented itself with fairly few options in terms of friendly how-to picture books to introduce the concept to her, so we thought we'd give this a go to reinforce the things we were doing. We went for a really relaxed approach to training, introducing pants instead of nappies and on the same day letting her watch the video version of this online alongside reading her the book, and found that she took to it immediately and requested the book/video daily. She grinned along with pride as she saw that Polly was gaining success in using her Potty and could match it with her own experience. She seemed to be enthralled by the video as if Polly was her teacher for everything potty-related, and she loved the little semi-interactive parts in the book where the child can choose their favourite colour/style of potty and pants. The Polly character was instantly relatable for her as the author does a good job of introducing mummy and daddy and their role in helping and praising Polly, and the illustrations at great - accomplished but friendly and accessible for kids. I liked the gentle approach hinted at in the book as it was in line with our style - it gives reassurance that accidents are nothing to be worried about and that mummy/daddy aren't disappointed in you for having one etc. The little cheering sound button, whilst inevitably annoying for us (how many presses can toddler squeeze in over two pages before you feel the need to scream?), adds another element of excitement and reward to the whole thing so can only really be a plus point. On the other hand, if your ears or patience are of a delicate nature then there is a screw-open door to remove the batteries (sweet relief!) Princess Polly's Potty is just right in terms of story length as well as physical size, and being a board book helps it survive a bit better (especially if it's inevitably going to be dragged around near an unfettered bottom). Great!

Decent book. But we have the boy version and bought this thinking it would be different, but it’s not. It’s literally exactly the same but with a different name.

I thought the button would make a flushing sound, but instead it's the sounds of cheers for precious little princess Polly for being so clever when it comes to taking on the potty and its challenges. She decides that she is ready to be more grown up, like her Mummy and Daddy and big brother. I read this book to my toddler with an English accent, so saying "nappies", which is what Princess Polly and her family calls diapers, sound just right! I explain to my toddler, "That's another word for diaper in their country." Princess Polly gets her new grown up princess pants, a new princess potty and even a lesson in proper princess potty rules by Mummy! This book is totally adorable, and it teaches independence, self care and making decisions... and even dealing with accidents with Mummy and Daddy's continuous support. Very good book. Seems long at first, but my 18mo old loves this book! *Doesn't come with British reader :-(
