Q: will this hold a 4" diameter pillar candle or cylinder vase?

From side to side the pillar is right at 4" in diameter and your candle would sit right on the edge. However these are made to hold in place a 3 1/8" candle. The pillar has a sunk in spot for that size of a candle to sit right in.

Q: do these work for battery operated candles? Do they have a spike in them?

Hello, these candle holders do not include spikes so battery operated candles sit perfectly fine on top!

Q: Will 3×3 pillar candles fit these?

I have these wonderful candle holders in three of the four colors offered and change them with my seasonal decor. All of my candles are Luminara battery operated candles that are advertised to have 3" bases. They fit comfortably on all of the holders. Enjoy!
