Great story and writing for grade 4-7
I thought about rating it 4 stars but for the intended audience I think it deserves the full 5. There is a good variety of interesting characters and the setting in St. Peter is well developed. The energy and progress of the plot it quick and engaging.

Summer Adventure Story
Fearless is about a young girl named Jessie Nelson whose mother is fighting in Afghanistan in operation Enduring Freedom. Three months have passed since Mom's last letter, and Jessie and her dad fear the worst. Dad moves them in with their Grandpa in the rural town of St. Peter, Minnesota for the summer, hoping a change of scenery will take their minds off the fact that Mom is MIA.Jessie quickly makes friends with two local boys named Nicky and Oscar, and they set out on a long bike ride where they discover an illegal puppy mill. Jessie's always wanted a dog, and she can't leave without rescuing the mom. The adventure is underway as she brings the dog home and the three attempt to keep Dusty hidden from Jessie's dad and grandpa.Jessie wears a "fearless" t-shirt (a parting gift from Mom) every day in hopes it will give her the strength she needs to do the right thing. She journals in poems and longs for a letter from her mom, so she'll know she's okay.Everything comes to a head when a tornado hits the town, damaging several buildings, and Dusty runs away in the mayhem. In this tale of bravery and fear, Jessie tests her mettle and in just the right moment, acts out the motto on her t-shirt.This middle-grade adventure story has plenty of action to keep 8-12 year-olds turning the page. The heavy subject matter is handled delicately and through the eyes of a child. I highly recommend this book.
