Arrow: The Complete Fifth Season [Blu-ray]

Another great season (Prior Season Spoilers)
+++Warning, this contains spoilers from the prior season of Arrow, but no major season 5 spoilers.+++Season 5 picks up with Oliver still reeling over Laurel's death at the hands of Damien Dhark while still discharging his duties as mayor. He is encouraged by Felicity to work with a new team of vigilantes, including Rene Ramirez/Wild Dog (played by Rick Gonzalez), Evelyn Sharp/Artemis (played by Madison McLaughlin), Rory Regan/Ragman (played by Joe Dinicol), Curtis Holt/Mister Terrific (played by Echo Kellum), and Dinah Drake/Black Canary (played by Juliana Harkavy). There is a bit of a swerve in the identity of the season's big bad, with a reveal that occurs later in the season. The season flashbacks to the fifth (and last) year of Oliver's life before being rescued. That portion of the story heavily involves Oliver in Russia working with Anatoly against Konstantin Kovar, a tyrant played by Dolph Lundgren. The season ends on a major cliffhanger with the fate of many of the team members in limbo. For those who get the blu-ray set, the A/V quality is pretty much the same as it has been for the prior season releases. The 23 episodes are spread across four discs, and the set includes the crossover episodes for the "Invasion" crossover event which includes episodes from Flash and Legends of Tomorrow and brings in Melissa Benoist's Supergirl character. Arrow's episode of the three-show crossover (which also happens to be Arrow's 100th episode), is the middle chapter of the crossover event and brings back some of the actors such as John Barrowman, Susana Thompson, and Manu Bennett, who have appeared on the show. They also include a clever line about Tommy being a doctor in Chicago as a nod to Colin Donnel being on the show Chicago Med, even though he does not physically appear in the episode). The other extras include deleted scenes for select episodes, a half-hour portion of the show's 2016 Comic-Con panel, a 5-minute gag reel, and a few of making-of featurettes, one devoted to the crossover and a couple devoted to the show's storylines.Ultimately, if you have liked the prior seasons of Arrow, you will probably like this one. The show continues to develop the main characters, and the addition of the new team brings some new life into the show. Stephen Amell does a very good job playing Oliver, keeping his brooding, moody roots but branching out from that. The season has a good guest cast including pro wrestler Cody Rhodes and the aforementioned Dolph Lundgren. And, of course, characters from the other shows appear throughout the season, not only for the crossover but in small cameos in other episodes. It is definitely worth watching.

I'm adopting a wait and see posture.
% stars! I am a DC (Detective Comics) fan from the 1960's. I think that DC should have been as brave and innovative as my other fave Marvel, and come out with their Universe of Characters sooner. I can't say that I'm totally in favor with the changes, but, I did suport the initial changes of the "Crisis on Multiple Earths" in the late 60's early 70's ??? The temporary changes to Superman, the introduction of "The New Gods", Apokolypse, Darkseid, Orion, O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Crops), all seemed to add new life to the DC UNIVERSE. Then the additional changes via Parallax (Hal Jordan completely controlled by the ancient Oan enemy, seemed to add more to hand off to the new generation of fans. I'm not going to pretend to be crazy about the new FLASHPOINT storyline, but I'm not unimpressed so far. Hal Jordan's failure was no less inimical than Barry Allen's promises to be. I'm going to set back and see what develops. I might just be pleasently suprised again! Go DC!

Amazing Return to Form this Year Thanks to A Strong Villain, A Great Finale, and Good New Additions to the Cast
The fifth season of Arrow is a great success after the dismal lows of the final episodes of Season 4. How the series improved so much over a single summer break is astounding to me. Season Five sees the series come full circle with Oliver Queen facing off against his most brutal and brilliant opponent since Deathstroke: Prometheus. A calculating killer who stalks the Team, Prometheus' motivation is to wholly prove to Oliver that his entire crime-fighting crusade was a sham built upon a single secret: that Oliver enjoys killing and that he takes lives because he wants to not because he has to. To that end, Oliver is forced to retread many steps this year first by rebuilding Team Arrow from the ground up with new recruits such as a successor to dearly departed Laurel's Black Canary mantel, to Wild Dog (a vigilante gun wielder who starts off slow but quickly becomes one of the best new additions), to Curtis Holt's new identity as Mister Terrific. Some are better than others (Evelyn Sharpe as Artemis for example is often undercooked and barely used and Ragman while an awesome character from the comics doesn't get much to do), but overall the team is in better shape than last year. Going up against threats like Prometheus, menacing gangster Tobias Church, and an arsenal-wielding gunman named Vigilante, the team has to learn to rely on each other fast to survive. The much maligned flashbacks stepped up their quality as well this year (though they are still not as important or as gratifying as back in the first two seasons). This year sees the final missing year of Oliver's exile take him to Russia to take down crime boss Konstantin Kovar (played with great malice by Dolph Lundgren) as he promised to do to his forgettable female compatriot from last year's flashbacks. The good news is we reunite Oliver with his old Russian pal Anatoly from the second season and learn how he infiltrates the Bratva (Russia's mob). Though the flashbacks do suffer from some slower periods (especially around the midpoint of the season when Oliver and Anatoly are wasting time on Gregor, a Bratva captain loyal to Kovar) they are nowhere near as bad as the endless stretches of running around in circles Oliver spent during years three and four. Also, the finale of the flashbacks that show how Oliver manufactures his "escape" and return home from the island is a great full circle turn that is emotionally resonant in all the right ways.Thankfully, unlike last year as well the season ends on a major high note with many familiar faces returning to join Oliver in his final throw down with the impeccable Prometheus. Really the only major letdowns this year (aside from a few weaker filler episodes here and there) are the treatment of Diggle and Felicity. The two OG Team Arrow members have the rockiest time this year, though Felicity gets a strong final arc in the back half of the season. Diggle's decision to return to the army last year is quickly retconned with him framed for treason by a corrupt superior officer. That story arc mostly spins its wheels for the first half of the season with Dig trying to clear his name and/or hiding out from the law. Also, he gets a bunch of needless relationship drama with his wife at certain points to fulfill that CW brand melodrama factor. Felicity once again often has to play nagging ex to Oliver though her aforementioned later arc in which she teams up with a corrupt team of super hackers to take down Prometheus her own way does provide some good material for her to work with. The main problem for Felicity is two fold: one she has a new love interest this year who never gets enough screen time to justify his presence or her "intense" feelings for him. Second the series still can't help but dredge up the specter of Olicity as in one of the weakest late season episodes in which the pair is trapped in a cave in together and spend the whole time bickering and flashing back to happier times together. Again, thankfully Felicity is nowhere near as bad as the previous two years, but she is still a love her/hate her presence for many fans.Overall, the few big weaknesses of this season are easily overcome by the major heel turn in quality. Season Five is a great return to form that ends with a major cliffhanger that has me back on the Arrow train and ready for the next year. This show has survived a dip in quality that would have killed lesser shows and reminds us all why it was such a major phenomenon in the first place, one that launched an entire "Arrowverse." Especially since Flash and Supergirl were rockier in their third and second seasons respectively it was great to have such a return to form from this group. Much props to the writers and the great actor who plays this year's villain and special props to Stephen Amell who does his best work this year and proves what an asset he is to the show.

Arrow season 5
Arrow season 5 it's definitely a big improvement from season 4. It's right up there with season 2 and 3. For me season 2,5, and 8 go shoulder to shoulder as the best seasons of the show. This one goes big with the fight scenes, with new characters and with older returning characters, which a new menacing villain, with the crossover, and with an epic finale. The dvd versions have all the episodes on 5 discs, but doesn't include the entire crossover just the 100th arrow episode which by itself is a great episode. I don't know if the blu-rays have the entire crossover. Overall if you're a fan of the show this is definitely one of the best seasons of the show.
