Christopher Marlowe: The Complete Plays

Worth th we read
The only objectionable play (by modern standards) was The Jew of Malta (it was a difficult read for me), but keep in mind the period in which it was written. The rest were all well written and enjoyable.

Marlowe is a great, authoritative author.
Every single one of these plays is of the Tragedy theatrical genre, and it's hard to think of Marlowe writing anything else as a result. He deals with heavy-handed historical themes with great authority, drawing stark pictures of the title characters in each play. The poetry of Marlowe's verse is what really makes these plays something to savor, and I'm surprised at how readable it all is. I understand that Penguin has standardized the spelling, which really makes this a breeze to read through. I won't hesitate to buy the companion volume that features Marlowe's poetical works either.

Mad for Marlowe
I'm mad for Marlowe, Christopher Marlowe, that is!I liked the library book so much that I decided to own a copy for myself. To my surprise and delight, Amazon had the very same book, so I bought it.And it came in a reasonable amount of time (just under a week).I have ordered from Amazon before, and will do so again, as I need to,and have the funds. The book was in mint-new condition. Ifound the place where I left off reading the library copywith no problem, and marked it with one of my many bookmarks.I'm so delighted with this book that I can't wait to go thepark to read it aloud with my friend.

An Interesting, If Difficult, Read
All of these plays had some interest and gave me some insight into Marlowe as a writer. Three in particular (Tamburlaine, Jew of Malta, and Doctor Faustus) were very powerful, and showed me Marlowe as a writer whose poetry resonates with power and whose characters seem to reach against the confines of the very dramas they find themselves in. One can very much see the influence Marlowe had on Shakespeare, to the point where Shakespeare seems to have been compelled to answer and respond to Marlow’s major plays with plays of his own (as I see it, Titus Andronicus and the Henriad respond to Tamburlaine, Merchant of Venice to Jew of Malta, and Hamlet to Doctor Faustus). I am curious as to how Marlowe would have developed had he lived. He seems a very talented poet and playwright, but one who is lacks Shakespeare’s range of styles and voices. Who knows what he would have become, but this was a worthwhile read and I’m glad I worked my way through it.This was a good, affordable edition, and I like that includes all of the plays. I found Marlowe a bit tricky to read, and this took me longer to read than I would have liked, but, again, a worthwhile read.

Very different from his contemporary, Shakespeare. Few complex characters and the imagery is not exceptional. Still, very interesting in the context of the Elizabeth I era.

Decepcionada

If you've read Shakespeare
Then you should probably add Christopher Marlowe to your reading list. Certainly his plays express his youth, slightly uneven in structure, but they show another side to playwriting in Elizabethan times, in particular when we compare them with the works of Shakespeare. A good edition with helpful vocabulary as an index (argosy, anyone?) and commentary.
