This Country of Ours: The Story of the United States Volume 1: H. E. Marshall's "This Country of Ours" - Annotated, Expanded, and Updated

This is a great update. Easier to read and nice that I don’t have to screen and change the offensive words as I go. Also like the notes at the end of each chapter. This isn’t the whole book, as the rest is in the works, just be aware.

This is only part of the original work which will be fleshed out into three different volumes, but it is so worth the extra expense. I own the original but I’m planning to purchase all these editions as they are published. This edition is so much easier to read aloud with the proper punctuation. I also greatly appreciated the notes at the end of the chapter along with the pronunciation guide. Comparing chapter one from both books, derogatory and offensive words or phrases were removed. Rather than saying the generic Indians and natives, or the offensive salvages, we are given the tribal name! At the end of the chapter there are notes giving us a little more info on this tribe. We are also given source information and website for further research.I’ve been told that people with reading challenges struggle with certain fonts and spacing. I think the new book will help with that.

The slight changes in wording for accuracy and respect for Native tribes makes this classic so much more accessible for me to read with my son. He loves it. I can’t wait for other volumes to come out.

I had another copy of this book (full version) and have just hated the formatting, and readings were bogged down with so many errors. This version is just wonderful, lovely in the hands, great formatting and I love the additional notes and pronunciation guides. I have two students currently using this book for history, but the older is beyond what is contained in this Volume 1, so has to use our old version. I cannot wait for more!

We use this book for our curriculum Ambleside Online. I have gone through the book fully with an older child so I was really glad Donna-Jean decided to update the language. She has done an excellent job with the annotations and expansion. This is a history book that we all need. Can't wait for the next volumes.I read this book to my 8 year old. My 10 year old read it on her own with no difficulty.

I typically dislike updated texts but this is one case where I am delighted to be able to purchase this volume instead of the older one. Looking forwards to volume 2!

I didn’t realize this is volume 1 meaning the whole book wasn’t included, and for the same price h can just buy the whole book. Very strange wouldn’t recommend

I ordered the hardcover. It is very nice quality. The binding is tight, the cover is matte and beautiful. I ordered this version for our homeschool curriculum (Ambleside Online) because I will not need to “edit on the fly” as I read aloud. Donna-Jean wrote a lovely introduction and explanation of her edits. The notes at the end of the chapters are helpful, and they are not at all distracting. I appreciate the research and hard work that went into this volume, and I’m excited to see the future installments.
