I leave it standing overnight in a glass with with water and washing liquid. Then if you really want 'clean' you can wipe down with a Q-Tip + Tooth pick.

Will the bristles leave scratches when used to clean the kitchen sink?

Typical sink is stainless steel and hard to scratch. I use mine to clean my dishes and not my sink. These bristles are not that abrasive
