Cut new threads in cast iron.
I didn’t realize this carbon steel tap wasn’t for tapping a new hole in iron or steel, but more for chasing and rethreading. Which is odd because they sell it with a drill bit! Nevertheless I drilled a hole in a cast iron pipe cap, about 1/4” thick, with three successive pilot holes and then the supplied bit and lots of cutting oil. Then hand tapped it with this tap. It was my first time to drill and tap. I went very slow and backed out the tap to clean out the cutting chips from both the tap and the pipe cap every 1/4 to 1/2 turn. And used plenty of Tap Magic cutting oil. There was no visible damage to the tap. I got my hole threaded and installed a pipe nipple and ball valve and all secure and no leaks under 60 PSI of water. Only later did I read about using HSS and carbon steel taps for different applications! My other use for this will be on a Pentek Big Blue plastic sump housing for a whole house water filter, so I can install a drain valve. It should work fine on plastic. But I did manage to erroneously (I think) cut new threads in cast iron with this tap.

My first time using a tap, worked great
I bought this to add npt threads to a DIY vacuum chamber. This was my first time using a tap at all, and it worked great first try. The threads change angle halfway down, but that's probably due to my lack of experience. Despite that, my vacuum guage and tee fitting fit right in no problem. With thread tape, there is no leaks at the threads. This worked perfectly, and it was nice that the bit came with the tap, since most drill bit sets don't have a 7/16". I would have loved if it also came with a tap wrench (I used a ratchet with a 14mm socket), but at this price point I can't conplain.

Used this tap set for a barb fitting on my mini bike engine for vent pressure equalization lines.

great tap set
works great tap NPT in to PVC. Only thing to watch for is the bit's shank in diameter is larger than most cordless and electric drill chucks. I have a heavy duty drill that it fit in to.

It’s good for the price
I bought this to drill and tap a breather for an old np205 transfer case. It did the job, but the tap shows a little wear from one use.I wouldn’t buy this for a machine shop, but if you’re like me and will only tap one 3/8 hole in your life this is perfect

Correct thread pitch and bit size for the job
Excellent value and works at expected. The tap and bit cut with no problems and still seem to be sharp after a few uses.

Tap is not good quality. I got what I needed done, but barely, and now it's no good.
I should have paid attention to the negative reviews. I bought this because I had to drill and tap two holes in a piece of 1/4" mild steel. The drill bit went through OK (I started out with a small bit and worked my way up to this one, as is the norm, and the bit still had a good edge on it after the two holes). The tap, however, is garbage. I got the first hole tapped and there was very noticeable damage to the tap. I managed to get the second hole tapped as well, but it was a struggle, and then the tap was difficult to remove from the hole because the damaged threads on it were trying to ruin the new threads I had just made. Remember, this was in 1/4" mild steel. I couldn't imagine trying to use it in cast iron, or anything harder than brass, really. The tap is no longer usable. I got my two holes done, but barely.

Great Combination
Drilled and tapped a hole on top of Manifold (F150) for a Heater Hose fitting. The Manifold is made from aluminum and this combination worked perfectly for me, just remember to lubricate both the hole and the tap. Did the repair with the manifold cover still on the vehicle by using an 18" torque wrench with a long extension and 17mm socket, worked like a charm. Used the socket and torque wrench because I was not able to find a suitable sized tap wrench that will fit the taps 1/2 inch square end. Many tap wrenches claim to accept 1/2 inch taps but do not open wide enough to insert a 1/2 inch square peg. I found this out the hard way and now have two new tap wrenches in my tool box.John Perry

Inferior Quality
I have been a maintenance mechanic for many years and needed this size to add to my tools.Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed with the quality of steel in this tap. Using the supplied drill and proper threading oil it failed. After only having 7-8 threads in one flute broke with very little pressure. Look at the color in the break, definitely low quality steel or bad hardening process.I will be returning it for a full refund and look for something better.

Wrong size packaged in listed size container.
Good bit. Good tap. Just be cautious of the size. I ordered 1/4npt kit and got a 1/8npt kit. The package even said 1/4. Luckily it was smaller than I needed so I could resize larger, but if it was in reverse I could have been detrimental as I was drilling a diff housing for ARB air locker.Just double triple check before use.

Drill broke first time within a second
Might have "America" in the name, but it's not of the quality you expect from a made in America product. The tap worked ok.
