Works great, looks great... buy one .. now
I can't believe we went so long using keys like cavemen. In the olden days of last week, if we wanted to start our car to run for a minute or two because the latest polar vortex has swept in from the north, we had to remember to bring another set of keys to lock the deadbolt or we would have to shut the car off then go back and lock the door and then restart the car... madness. This all changed this past weekend. I got up the courage to enlarge the holes on our door so I could swap out the deadbolt for this glorious piece of technology. The instructions were fine, the only confusion was the back plate that is inside the house has a cam that must be vertical or the lock will not work. Once it was installed, the programming was very straight forward and easy to do. You can have 19 different user codes which can be disabled at any time. The keypad DOES light up when you push a key which is great for when you run late and forget to leave the outside light on. The action on this lock is a neat idea as well. You have to manually turn the deadbolt to lock and unlock (reviews I have read say this helps prolong the battery life) If the keypad is not engaged, this knob spins freely. To lock, you just have to push the Schlage button, which engages the knob and allows you to lock the door. To unlock, key in your code to engage it, then twist to unlock, too easy. Over all I am very happy with this and wish I had gotten one long ago. It is a heavy well built lock that has a bunch of great reviews around the web. The only negative thing I can say is that it only comes with one key. I wish it had two, but I can get another cut easily.

Great lock, even better customer service
Great lock. Unfortunately, after like five months of use, it stopped working for me. However, I reached out to Schlage customer service and they were amazing. They helped me trouble shoot it, and when that didn't work, they sent me a new one and checked in to make sure it was working fine. I haven't had any issues with the new one even after a year, so it was probably some sort of fault with the original one I bought. The lock itself is durable and easy to use, good quality, and looks great on my door. The exemplary customer service is just another reason to recommend this product!

Sturdy, attractive, easy to install, and freedom from keys!
A coworker installed Kwikset 910 Z-Wave SmartCode Electronic Deadbolt recently and raved about it, so I also got a 910 model for the front door and a 909 (non Z-wave) for the garage door to replace existing Schlage manual locks. The Kwikset locks were flimsy junk that wasted hours of my life. I've since installed a bronze and a chrome Schlage BE365VCAM619 Camelot Keypad Deadbolt (manually-operated keypad locks), which are super sturdy and a snap to install (took under a minute). Hefty metal all around, including the entire bolt chamber. Interesting feature of the outside lock knob is that it freely spins around in either direction (so it can't be forced open) until the right code has been entered, then it engages (with beep & green light flash) so you can turn the actual lock. Accordingly, to lock from the outside, press the Schlage logo button at the top, then turn the knob. From the inside, it's the usual 11 / 1 O'clock knob turn (always engaged). This with keyless entry cars now lets my wife and me never have to worry about remembering, carrying, or digging for a key ever again, especially with our hands full with the kids & assorted bags/groceries! Pro: 1. MUCH sturdier in heft and mounting than Kwikset, which felt like a toy in comparison 2. Very easy to install 3. 10 individual number buttons vs Kwikset's 5 4. Long-lasting 9V battery (included), especially since lock is manually turned 5. Stores up to 19 user codes at once (you can delete specific ones, all, or reset all to factory default). Each house member can use a code of his/her liking, and temporary codes can be made for workers, friends, etc. Con: 1. No auto-lock feature like Kwikset Neutral: 1. Had to bring them to a locksmith to match my existing keys (optional; comes with 2 keys each) 2. Only 4 digit lock codes (but then so are most ATM pins & combo locks)

100% Perfect Now (after 95% the first month)
[Updated because the early issues are completely gone] This purchase was an exact duplicate of the Schlage model & finish that I had to discard after 10 years of use. I expected more than 10 years, but really can't complain. This replacement works exactly the same, which is a good thing. During the first month only, this new unit occasionally failed to open the lock until the second try. All but one of those failures was for locking on the way out; just one time unlocking on the way in. After that first 30 days, everything has worked perfectly. I didn't call Schlage customer service because the need wasn't severe and because the issue was both infrequent and fixable on retry. Using the key instead of buttons always worked, so I was never really locked out. No big worries, so four stars initially - five stars now. My identical previous front door lock did not have this problem. Well, at least not until it died. But by that point even the key didn't work. I wish it had lasted longer than ten years. But I obviously like this model because I bought another one just like it. Oh - and I chose it originally because of a top rating from Consumer Reports years ago. Comparing my Schlage deadbolt (two now) to my original non-Schlage keypad lock, this model is definitely an improvement. The original used an internal motor to throw & retract the deadbolt. I thought I would prefer this feature, but I soon ran into problems when the internal plastic gears got stripped whenever the deadbolt wasn't perfectly aligned going into the door jamb or had too much friction coming out - common for my front doorframe from slight hot/cold weather warping. To be clear, this was a problem on a different deadbolt lock which is why I switched to this Schlage model where I provide the locking & unlocking force (no motor) after pushing buttons. I haven't found anything plastic in this Schlage product. A final note: This deadbolt lock is fairly easy to install if you follow the easy-to-read instructions, i.e., not broken English from some poor translation. It's not a simple as, say, a plug-and-play USB for your computer. But most home front doors won't need any tools beyond a normal-sized screwdriver. Then "programming" the combination is crazy simple, again by following the clear instructions. It's nice too that they supply the 9-volt battery because I never stock those at home. The product has that heavy solid-metal heft that you want for home protection.
