Works well once you get the hang of it.
A great item to have in your tackle bag. Brought in a lot of lake trout from between 30 and 80 feet.

Shockingly bad design. Unusuable, not worth any amount of money.
Rapala should be ashamed of themselves.I bought this line counter for measuring monofilament backing to spool under braided line on a spinning reel. The first thing to note: if you mount this on the bottom of a normal spinning rod, you will not see the counter. Fortunately, I have a telescopic rod, so I was able to turn the rod blank 90 degrees to the left. But what I soon found was that the counter was severely under-measuring the amount of line that was going through it. Some fiddling later, I had it mounted higher up on the rod, and as I was reeling in more line, the tension came out and it just stopped counting. I found the line STUCK INSIDE the mechanism. The counter was way off the mark and by that time, the spool was full of backing. What a waste. What a way to ruin a fishing trip. This product is an abject failure. Do not buy it under any circumstances.

It works but needs help.
I found that with the poles I have used this item on, the line comes out of the counter while letting line out. I have also found that it restricts the line from feeding out in a normal fashion. I have to hold the line in the counter slot, then pull the pole up briskly to force line to feed threw the slot using the water resistance on the line while the leader is in the water. I do use it and will continue to use it.Works in a pinch.

Helped me catch a lot of fish!
I have read a negative reviews of this product however it has worked fine for me. I own 4 and use them for down rod fishing live baits and depth on the counter is about where I am see the sinkers on my sonar. Sometimes with line below 10lb it will get caught in the inside clip when locking it. You learn to pull the line to the side before locking the clip. Overall not that bad of product for price.

No Waste
Good product. I highly encourage you to buy this not just for the depth for lake/deep sea fishing but for buying cheaper high yardage lines to know exactly how much line you can install on each reel.

Did not work with braided line.
I purchased two of the line counters. Both of them would not hold the 60lb. braided line that I was using. Every time that I would set up the line inside the counter and set the lock the line would pop out. Because I waited past the return date I ended up throwing both of them out. what a waist of time and money!!!

Not For Braided Lines
This line counter appears to be well constructed and I liked it, but it just will not work with the better, 8 strand braided lines such as Diawa's J-Braid and Samurai lines. They are just too slick. If can you make a full wrap (a full 360*) around the counters wheel, enough friction is generated to turn the counter wheel without slipping, but this is not the case with the Rapala. Because of the way it is constructed 180* is the absolute best you can do, therefore it slips.I do not know if, or how well, it will work with monofilament or fluorocarbon lines, since all I use are braids with fluorocarbon leaders. It does securely attach to various diameters of rods and is angled nicely so the counter digits are easily seen at all times. Like I said before, it's a really nice counter, but just does not work for my application.I do not recommend this counter to anyone that uses braided lines.Had no choice but to return this item.
