The book is divided into 3 sections: soul, funk, and hip-hop. I'm almost through the soul section, and WOW some things that seem so simple can be so difficult! Zoro provides helpful resources such as listening guides and coordination exercises as well. Great book; i would reccommend it to any intermediate/advanced drummer

This is a very comprehensive instructional book that includes the historical development of R&B, funk, hip-hop etc. I would recommend it to anyone that is ready to move from beginning basics to cool grooves.

but comprehensive?incomprehensive is more like itbuy if you are a teacher or smth!very advanced stufflearning to play it on a computer much easier

Just a fantastic book. With the warmups to each section, the encyclopedia of beats AND famous groove transriptions, it's a treasure trove of useful drum exercises. Add in the historical research and the discographies, it's simple a must have and a drumming classic.I'll add that while it's a little dated now, the sections on arranging drum machine hip hop beats for set playing is invaluable as well.

I would have preferred more rock/funk and jazz time beats in the book.

Ich wollte das Buch schon vor Ewigkeiten mal kaufen, aber dachte "Naja, das alte Ding, steht bestimmt nur altbackenes Zeug drin". Nun hab ich es also doch mal bestellt und mein Fazit:1. Man bekommt nicht wie auf dem Foto die alte Ausgabe, sondern die etwas schickere Neuüberarbeitete2. Es behandelt schon die ganzen alten Classic-RnB-Stile, aber das kommt keineswegs altbacken rüber, es sind die Beats die man heute auch bei den aktuellen RnB/Soul-Stars hört (und viele kleine Soundideen, auf die ich selbst nicht gekommen wäre, aber die mir dann echt bekannt vorkamen, von aktuelen Radiotiteln). Die sind manchmal gar nicht so komplex aber Zoro lässt sie einfach mal ungeheuer groovy klingen (höre die beiliegene CD) das bringt mich zu...3. Zoro ist tatsächlich ein Groove-Gott, bei ihm gehen selbst einfache Viertel auf der HiHat richtig ab...was auch das Buch zu mehr werden lässt, als nur ein Lehrbuch. Ich denke, es soll richtig ein Lebensgefühl vermitteln...eben das Groove-Lebensgefühl...ich denke auch deswegen muss man sich im Buch durch seitenweise Hintergrundinfos, "philosophische" Zoro-Sprüche und haufenweise Lenny-Kravitz-Fotos wälzen... Zoro wollte da einfach ein Lebensgefühl vermitteln... er bringt einen dazu, dass man selbst Viertel übt, bis sie eben grooven. Ich glaube man tut dem Buch Unrecht, wenn man sagt "Ach für das seitenweise Gelaber will ich nicht bezahlen."Als Randinfo vielleicht noch: Das Buch ist nicht ganz die Richtung "Gospel-RnB-Usher-Aaron-Spears-Drumming" wie es heutzutage auch populär ist. Allerdings ist mir zu diesem Thema auch kein einziges Buch bekannt (und ich habe echt gesucht, maximal Spears' DVD, aber die ist eben nicht so strukturiert, wie ein komplettes Lehrbuch). Wenn man in diese Richtung starten will, ist Zoro hier aber wirklich ein sinnvoller Einstieg

Das Buch zeigt einen Überblick verschiedener älterer R&B grooves mit - m.E. zu umfangreiche Darstellung der einzelnen Schlagzeuger bzw. Selbstdarstellung von "Zoro". Von dem Buch habe ich mir mehr schlagzeug-spezifischere , d.h. detailliertere Rhytmen versprochen. Die - leider nur - 3 Musikbeispiele sind o.k., wobei Darstellungsfehler im Ablauf vorhanden sind.

Full of advice on technique and being a drummer. Takes you from playing a drum beat to learning how to really groove. 10 out of 10.
