ABRSM Violin Scales & Arpeggios, Grade 7: from 2012

Horrid little scale book
Well you'll need it for grade 7... but it is a ghastly, unrefined scale book with no style and not enough effort or thought put into it. Chromatic scales leave you in the dark ; they (Associated Board) don't bother to finger them... a suggestion or example would have been nice. Some good fingering now and then in the scales and arpeggios, but if you want a good scale book (read comprehensive and coherent) get Barber Barber or Hrimaly or just about anything else out there. AB should publish all scales in one volume, or possibly two, and should consider 24 note scales (so 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 notes to a bow can be played). I don't like the double-stop scale format either; it's good for practice but not for an exam.

ABRSM has us by the short hairs
It's neither good nor bad -- just something that is hard to avoid buying if you have to take music exams, or have kids or students that do. I guess it just about justifies the price -- only just -- but the Associated Board should just make this stuff available to download for exam candidates. I mean, with exam fees now running ~£50, how much more do they want to squeeze them for?As well as the obvious cost, there is a hidden cost as well -- this material is so expensive for what it is, that people will buy online to save a couple of quid, rather than using a local, independent music shop. Independent shops rely on exam materials for a large part of their trade, so if it becomes so expensive that music teachers all buy online, there will soon be no shops.I've bought no end of this kind of stuff over the years, and I never feel any happier about it.

Condition not quite as described
This was the old edition of Grade 7 scales and arpeggios. It may have said this somewhere but the image shown was the current edition which was, therefore, what I was expecting. The book was described as in good condition and unmarked. It was in good condition, but was covered in pencil notes. These can be rubbed out but that's time consuming and I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known. But the book is usable so not worth the trouble of replacing. Irritating.

Does what it says on the cover
This book contains the scales (regular and chromatic), arpeggios, dominant sevenths, diminished sevenths and double-stop scales you need for ABRSM Grade 7 violin. The regular scales are presented in both even-note and long-tonic formats. Tempos and suggested fingerings are included. There are notes in the front that explain what the examiner will be looking for. If you have any of the other books in this series, you know what you're getting!
