Simply the best fantasy writer working in the field today
Joe Abercrombie manages the unlikely feat of surpassing his First Law trilogy. The Age Of Madness novels are more accomplished in terms of narrative pacing, characterization, and humour. He has sharpened and honed his style in evident imitation of the many sharp blades, axes and spears that proliferate within these grossly dark, comedic novels. His is not a jolly world-view; quite the opposite. He is utterly, ferociously committed to the logic of selfishness, revenge and ambition as measured against any other virtue you’d care to mention: kindness, love, selflessness, gratitude, high-minded idealism or what-have-you. These novels are a celebration of ruthless self-interest as seen through the lens of an emerging capitalism in his fictional universe centered on The Union and its constituent parts. Despite this, his characters are often deeply lovable and admirable, and one can’t help but root for many of them, even when they might be fighting or contesting with each other. The plotting is taught, the atmosphere tense, the comedic relief explosive and original. To my mind, he is in another league altogether when compared to his peers, and that includes Patrick Rothfuss and George R. R. Martin. If you decide to purchase, a true pleasure awaits you.
