I can't recommend it enough.
Those of us in the RPG community know how big of a rift 3E caused in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Gone were the simple systems of 2E, replaced by clunky, math-heavy encounters and ridiculously-detailed skills. Power creep, too many options, etc. all became issues that were eventually addressed in 5E (your mileage may vary on that, too).Castles and Crusades fixed it a LONG time ago. This is everything 3E --SHOULD-- have been. The SIEGE engine for skills is simple, direct, and makes gameplay a breeze. The classes received reasonable updates, THAC0 was replaced (ehh... I love THAC0 but I can see why others don't), and adventures all have that "classic" feel without having to completely discard everything AD&D was and is.Give this a shot. The best thing about each "edition" is that they're merely reprints with some fixes to grammar, spelling, format, etc. Castles and Crusades' rules don't change. You can buy a first print or this newest one -- It's the same game!

A great book, for a great game, at a tremendously reasonable price.
A great game. C&C does a fantastic job of simplifying the game, using a great d20 mechanic, the Siege Engine. This book is very well packed with essentials to run the game. With an emphasis and eye to making the game playable, fun, and filled with time used to adventure, not just map out a battle and start "The Grind", this game is perfect for anyone who wants to play a game where you move through the story of your character's adventures, not just play it out, one long random encounter at a time.Congrats to C&C on this great game, with a beautifully done book that is rich with information and color, and very well organized. Thanks!

Perfect for old school gaming
C&C is an excellent set of rules for those who want to play table top games in the fashion of the first edition of dungeons and dragons. The sixth printing is attracting and moderately well edited. While this game is not anything new or revolutionary, it is good at what it does. C&C is one of my games of choice. Tip: unlike brand name D&D, you only need the Player's Handbook and Monsters & Treasure books. The Castlekeeper's Guide (the analog to the Dungeon Master's Guide) is not needed in any way.

Book is Excellent and...
Kudos to breakpointbooks for outstanding packaging with a handwritten note. The book itself is what I expected overall; a modernized AD&D 1st/2nd edition based system. Highly recommend if you’ve become disenchanted with 5E’s videogame like feel with it’s superhero players that rarely die after level 4.

After a little bending the pages and flattening the binding out and the pages turned and laid fine.
The binding had a huge wrinkle in the first 16 pages, but I needed the book for a session the next day and didn't really want to deal with the inconvenience of shipping back and forth so I just kept it. After a little bending the pages and flattening the binding out and the pages turned and laid fine.

My new favorite RPG....
Castles& Crusades is a great pseudo D&D game, and it has become my favorite RPG system period. The game runs smoothly, from rapid combat to the attribute check system (known as SIEGE). If you are tired of all the feats and crunch of more recent versions of D&D and Pathfinder, and if you long for the olden days of easy-to-read and utilize monster stat blocks, then C&C will be your favorite game as well.

Why you ruin gnomes?
The rules and the art are okay. The rules are simple enough and promise hours of fun. The reason I gave it a 2 star rating is because the gnomes are ugly. So ugly I can't even see myself running a game. They look closer to trolls than they do to the gnomes I'm used to. A horrible decision to an otherwise great game.
