How do the backs come off???

The unscrew. The studs and backs are threaded.

what size is the stud? is it a 16 gauge?

In another question, the seller says the earring are 8mm (0 gauge). These are definitely not for normally pierced ears (18 or 20 gauge) Hated that I tried these on months after I bought them to find out they are too big for the holes in my ear lobes.
