Q: What is the smallest depth this vent can accomodate?

There is a flange on the backside that projects 1/2" .

Q: How do I secure these two halves (on my closet door)? I assume i cut a hole in my (1 1/2"D) closet door to fit them, but how to secure?

You will have to drill two or 4 holes in the face of each grill and secure the grill to the door with a screw or a toggle bolt depending on if the door is a solid core or a veneer.

Q: can I spray paint these?

They are made out of Aluminum alloy so if you would like to, make it so. Just prep them for a nice long-lasting finish.

Q: Can the back bars be removed easily for mounting flush with surface (face mounting) ?

Removed easily? That depends on what you're working with, they are made out of aluminum alloy so if cutting or grinding them off could be a chore not to damage or scratch them up but could be done. Better to make the hole your covering (depending on the material) big enough for the bars to fit into it to mount them flush they are a vent grille, so the hole is already there just widened a bit if needed. I don't know what you're putting them on, so you'll have to make that call.
