I'm trying to decide between the standard cracker and the xl/king size cracker. anyone have the xl/king size and wish they had gotten the smaller one?

The xl/king is the best buy to cut standard size firewood. I've recommended this to several people who have been happy they purchased the xl. This is the safest tool you can buy to cut kindling. Almost fun to use.

How does it handle wood 18 inches in length?

If you have the Cracker up on a stump the wood will have a better chance to split in two and slid off the sides. 18 inches is not so bad for the cracker, if I split a long piece and its still attached at the top I beat one side and that usually does the job. Well seasoned wood will just split all the way up, but if you're working with knots be prepared to finish the stringy parts by hand.

What height stump works good when using the XL?

Less than the 15” height of the unit and up to 22” - 24”+. BUT your wood type makes a huge difference the dryer the wood and straighter the grain makes cutting many lengths easy. The greener/wetter woods and cross grain types like hickory - tougher the job. Overall handles most of my usual lengths/hardwoods and just makes life simpler.

I have the xl version, and i have to use too much effort to get even smaller logs to split with a 4lb mallet. the wood bounces off the wedge. advice?

I suggest screwing it down on another larger log to hold it in place. Are you splitting green wood or cured? Dry wood splits easily with mine.
