Good book

If you want a reference text, do not buy this. I am sorry I did. To me, it is worse than useless, because it contains only half the information contained in the previous (5th) edition. As a result, if I have a patient care quandary and need detailed information, I need to rely on the previous edition (or better, other texts). Then, I need to try to find what little has been added and updated in this edition. By abridging a good reference text, this continues a terrible tradition of recent American Psychiatric Association publishing, whereby the most recent editions of its Textbook of Psychopharmacology (Schatzberg) and Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Dulcan) have all been severely abridged. What were decent reference texts are now survey or review texts - without being identified as such. These texts may be useful for medical students or prospective examinees wanting to read through for a review, but they are NOT suitable for practicing psychiatrists. One hopes that the American Psychiatric Association is not intentionally trying to dumb down the practice of psychiatry, but that seems to be an inevitable consequence of what is not just an APA mistake but their ongoing policy and practice. I would throw all of those texts away - except that I hate to destroy books - and paid good money for them.
