Q: Can i use this product for south american chiclids?

I don’t think this will be good for chickid, substrate helps to buffer your water to 6ph, I believe chiclids prefer a higher ph than that

Q: 2lbs good for 3 gallons?

Yes, with prob half over, unless your plan on keeping live plants, then you might wanna use more. But 2lbs will get it done.

Q: Anyone else have this stuff turn to dust as soon as it made contact with water?

I have the fine. It didn't turn to dust. Don't try to prewash it. Just put it in the tank. If you poor water gently onto bubble sheet or the package wrapper that helps not stir up the dirt. It settled in less than 2 days, then I started my filter.
