Ballerina Dreams

I was so inspired by Michaela's story
I was so inspired by Michaela's story, and commend her for overcoming many odds to reach her dreams. I love the theme of this book, but a single picture in this book really struck a nerve with me. Growing up in the US as a kid born in Africa, I was always asked if I lived next to monkeys when I lived in Africa. I was horrified when I flipped the page and saw monkeys randomly hanging out outside the orphanage. I didn't want my American born daughters to see this image, and draw the same conclusion. While Africa, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa has its many challenges, I want my daughters to be exposed to the strength and beauty of it's people and not stereotypes. And maybe I'm projecting my own experiences unto this book, and hopefully readers of this book will also see the beauty, and not only the challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Wonderful book
This was a Christmas present for my 6yr old granddaughter. She sat down and read it straight through. The book is pitched just right for the target audience - not shying away from difficult topics such as war and discrimination then focusing on positive thinking with lots of love and kindness and of course ballet.
