Can you, manually, turn them off if you don’t want them on all night?

Of course you can. If you don't want these garden solar lights to come on, you can turn off the switch on the solar panel.

how big in diameter is the lit area?

About 9 inches. Only half of them worked and they apparently do not enough solar power to make them glow very long. They are pretty though.

My lights are very dimmed. This is not working

Sounds like they’re not getting enough direct sunlight during the day. It doesn’t take a full 8 to 10 hours to charge them, but they do have to get “direct” sunlight. Also, once they do get the proper amount of charge, they don’t shine brightly ALL night, mine fire off from when it’s complete darkness to a little past midnight when they start to dim and eventually go I out altogether around 1 AM.
