The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu

Funny and better than it seems it should be ...
Feels like I shouldn't have liked it , but I did. The humor is well, stupid, but it made me laugh. The movie is just fun despite it flaws. The special effects are what they are for the tiny budget, my only problem was the main villain Starspawn. He just looks so dumb, has an awful voice , and is just generally annoying. He turns into a giant octopus later on and somehow manages to become LESS threatening..The three leads just have a great chemistry , and their jokes are vulgar , and actually seemed refreshing cause of how non PC they are. Wearing stupid costumes and hitting each other with foam sticks.. fine it made me laugh, whatever..There is an animation of Cthulhu coming to earth in the film and it's just amazing. The Lovecraft stuff in general is done well , which I was not expecting considering the movie being a horror comedy. I suppose there was no real sense of cosmic dread and lots of it was just tentacle / fish monster violence , but even "real" movies on this subject have trouble moving beyond that, so I can be lenient on a comedy.Funny , Lovecraft themes handled as well as can be expected , likeable characters .. worth a watch. Bring on the sequel and the Mountains of Madness ..

It was hard to finish
I expect some low quality to these types of movies, but this was just hard to watch all the way through. The jokes are bad and the action is roughly done. It is a B movie that only got my attention because of the HP Lovecraft hook. Best seen with several beers and friends to laugh it up.

Not for the "normal" of heart
So yeah, I'm going to say it. This movie isn't for people who were in the drama club, chess club, on the debate team or just a dumb jock.Yeah, I'm talking to you "normal". Move along. Nothing to see here.If you ever were exposed to Lovecraft, role-playing in the same room with 4-8 friends, hung around in the same circles as the nerdiest kids is school, then yeah... you're probably going to understand what the Mi-go is going on here. Now some people might be better off altered watching this, but it does a good job just straight up.Yes, you will have cheese. There will be nerdy goings on which will only be completely hilarious if you have seen some of these scene almost entire happen before your eye in real life. Those that know, know what I mean.Lovecraft fandom is real, and it can get pretty geeky (well, not bitings heads off of chickens, but...)This is a massive adventure. The kind of adventure that wants to jump up and rip your arms off and make expressionistic paintings with them.Did I say that there was plenty of cheese?Yes, there is cheese. But this is the good kind of nacho cheese that 9/10 late night gamers can appreciate. As it has been made clear by others, this is low budget, so you know the level of special FX you are going to be walking into.Take the horror for what it is. They were half laughing at the horror parts while the made this thing. I wouldn't doubt they had to edit out people laughing in the background while they were filming. On a very real level, may parts of it remain true to the Lovecraft stories and that is the plagiarism ... I mean brilliance of it.So when you're hanging out with your old D&D gang or that other crowd that collects too many of whatevers, they are going to understand what the Abdul Alhazred is going on.This movie isn't for everyone. It has a very targeted audience. All the rest of you can Shoggoth along and get back to being the cool kid in class.

Silly but worth watching
There are times when superior talent can overcome a $50,000 movie budget to make a movie we can enjoy, have fun with, and make fun of. This one is actually about in the same league as the "Librarian" movies in the stupid factor. And they had much more budget to work with. Cthulhu is a monster invented by H.P. Lovecraft, a real nasty one. The idea the three not very brave, not very smart, not at all athletic guys could defeat the minions of Cthulhu is ludicrous. But it is still mildly entertaining to watch them try. The blood spatter, which we get to see frequently, is very good. The acting is just at the bottom of what we can call professional. There are constant homosexual references. I guess the writer, Devin McGinn, though that would be funny so he repeated them all through the film. Director Henry Saine in his first feature outing did a reasonable job with what he had. Kyle Davis played Jeff, the descendent of Lovecraft. He is a professional actor. Devin McGinn played the sidekick, also writing the script and producing the film. I am amazed that the film is watchable at all, given the tiny budget. But it is, by the skin of its teeth. "The Last Lovecraft" runs for a short one hour and 18 minutes. It would have an R rating for constant foul language, even from a grandma lady. It gets a below-average two stars, which is not one star or no stars at all.

Good Fun if you don't have a stick lodged between your cheeks.
The film the Last Lovecraft is worth your time if you are (A) a Lovecraft fan, and (B) you have a sense of humor. You will read allot of reviews bashing this movie, the people who write those review should be pitied. They are so locked in to what they feel is Lovecraft's vision that they won't allow themselves to laugh. That being said, I love Lovecraft's work, i have read all of it, including the work he ghost wrote or teamed up with other people. I also have the innate ability to not take myself, or really anything too seriously. If by describing myself, i inadvertently described a reasonable facsimile of you, get this movie. And if you are like me, when its finished you will (A) wonder how tight the stick is lodged between the cheeks of someone who would hate this movie, and (B) hope there is a sequel.Hope this helps, and be sure to read the negative reviews, they are something special.
