Q: How do you replace a nipple style secondary anode rod that leaks around top?

Replace anode rod with the proper length anode rod.

Q: Can this replace rheem wh anode or, complicating things for me, does it go in water inlet/outlet pipe as i read in your q&a?

Lots of tanks have separate anode location from inlet and supply; others have anode in hw outlet which is where you would put this one since it has split inlet since bottom of tank top then going to common hole up thru center of galvanized steel connector that is threaded into your steel water outlet.

Q: I installed the anode rod very tightly but it’s still leaking at the top. (it’s very tight). cut to size. what’s the problem? needs plumbers tape, or?

You must with all plumbing fittings apply a sealant of 3-4 wraps of teflon tape and as a added leak preventative apply a plumbers paste before assembling. Also make sure you did not cross thread which can also cause leaks

Mostly aluminum with approx. 5% zinc. On any rod there are traces of magnesium and tin Mike
