Q: Looks like you operate the jog dials through the plastic, correct? How resistant is it to ripping a hole while doing so?

I've found it very resistant to tearing (the plastic is very pliable and stretches). I've used the same rain cover on 5 outings so far in heavy rain and have it folded for use on my next time out to get inclement weather photos.

Q: Are these rain covers only for use on a tripod or do they work either way (with and without a tripod)? looks like plastic drops down 2 ft underneath.

They work without a tripod just make sure you order the size to fit you lens. They are somewhat cumbersome but I think most any cover would be.

Q: Does this cover the lens completely, or is there a hole in the bag for the end of the lens to go through?

The end has a drawstring opening that you can adjust/tighten around the outside of your lens (I’d recommend attaching a lens hood first and tightening the drawstring around that). If you plan to take photos in the rain, you won’t want the plastic over the front of your lens because it will interfere with your images. But if you just want to keep the camera dry, you can close the drawstrings completely over the front of the lens. These were a lifesaver for me at an outdoor sports event when it misted all day. Highly recommend.
