Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules from Science in Sport (SIS). Informed Sport Accreditation as standard.
My partner tested this item. This is his review.Science in Sport (SIS) is a brand of nutritional supplements who have been going for as long as I can remember.Their science-lead approach to nutrition and supplements is something that is welcome, particularly in the current age of misinformation. Before considering purchasing and taking supplements, I would usually do a certain amount of my own research before reaching some sort of balanced conclusion based on the available scientific evidence. For me personally, as an amateur club level sports enthusiast (club level badminton) often looking to improve any easy and obvious deficiencies that I may have with my body, I see a supplements brand like Science in Sport and can relate to what they are offering (e.g. I'm not particularly someone who wants to put untested and somewhat unknown supplements in their body). I think SIS form a very important place in the sports supplements market as a trusted go-to brand for safe, knowledge-based and reasonably priced supplements.Science in Sport's supplements are also accredited by Informed Sport. This is imperative for elite sports athletes who need to ensure that the supplements that they are taking are clean of any banned substances. These Omega 3 capsules from Science in Sport are to be taken daily. There are 60 capsules in a pack. Typical values per capsule are 330mg of EPA and 220mg of DHA.The capsule shell has been made using Bovine Collagen. Being fish oils, there's no chance of them being vegan or vegetarian anyway. However, pescatarians wishing to take these would probably give them a miss. The use of animal based capsules (Gelatine or equivalent) appears to be standard practice for Fish based Omega-3 supplements. The size of the capsules is typical of a Omega-3 supplement of this kind, so nothing out of the ordinary here. The length is the size that would be considered "long" at around 2.5cm, for people who have difficulty swallowing tablets/capsules. Fortunately, being a soft capsule, it's easier to swallow than a hard tablet equivalent.Pricing wise, I think these are a little on the high side at 15p per capsule. A well known high street brand of supplements can go as low as 5p per capsule (during the usual standard promotion pricing) for the equivalent quantity of EPA and DHA daily serving. However, these supplements from SIS do have this all important Informed Sport certification/testing for banned substances, for those that need it.

Good price and smell nice and neutral
These are particularly aimed at athletes. SIS the manufacturer stresses that every batch is tested for substances banned in sport and that it maintains stringent quality testing procedures. They are fish oil based omega 3 tablets costing 15p per single daily dose. They are fairly large and zeppelin shaped but easy to swallow. Smell on opening is neutral not fishy, suggesting high production standards. Capsule shell is bovine collagen and glycerine. Although they are marked with a long shelf life, 22 months ahead, I think the risk of oxidation is such that they might be better taken within six months of purchase. They are a good dose. Each softgel gives 330mg EPA and 220mg DHA, so 550mg omega 3 fatty acids. They perform well on price and dose against my standard test which is to compare with the most similar Boots product. Boots 1000mg omega 3 fish oil capsules are 23p per daily dose by comparison, giving a 450mg combination of EHA and DPA omega 3 fatty acids. So more bang for your buck with this SIS product.A friend of mine who has rheumatoid arthritis swears by fish oil capsules. Some of her claims are borne out by the US Department of Health and Human Services who comment that: "RA causes chronic pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in the joints. Some clinical trials have shown that taking omega-3 supplements may help manage RA when taken together with standard RA medications and other treatments. For example, people with RA who take omega-3 supplements may need less pain-relief medication, but it is not clear if the supplements reduce joint pain, swelling, or morning stiffness."The evidence is a little more mixed for other health benefits from fish oil - though it might best be summarised by saying that omega 3 is essential for many cells and their function and omega 3 in diet, and possibly in supplements, may have preventative benefits for instance in helping prevent macular degeneration and heart attacks.EPA and DHA are difficult to increase in your body if you don't eat foods that directly contain them, as your body can only manufacture very small amounts from more basic forms of omega 3. So supplements may be worthwhile if fish, eggs and omega 3-rich vegetable oils such as rape seed are not a big part of your diet.

High potency Omega 3 - that's not just for athletes...
I'd not heard of the SIS (Science In Sport) brand before and, not being an athlete, I was a little hesitant initially and wondered whether this product would be suitable for me. It seems SIS is a company based in Nelson, Lancashire. Though their roots are in elite sport, this product is a straightforward one-a-day Omega 3 softgel that's not especially targeted at the sports' market. These softgels are not suitable for strict vegetarians or vegans as they contain fish oil and the softgel is made from bovine collagen. The capsules are in a black plastic container to shield the product from light and both tub and lid are recyclable. The pack I received had a long Best Before date of 24/08/2023.SIS was an unknown brand to me but I was confident to order this pack of 60 softgels - around a 2 month supply at the suggested serving. Why? - I simply looked at the EPA and DHA the product contains and it's high at 330mg EPA and 220mg DHA. I prefer a high potency Omega 3 and quite often I end up taking 2 capsules of some other brands to achieve a comparable strength. No need to with this product - a single softgel is sufficient.Added to this is my new found knowledge that SIS is a world leading brand in endurance sports nutrition - which only served to increase my confidence in this product. At time of writing, this 2 month pack was priced at £8.99 - reasonable value for a good, potent Omega 3 from a specialist in supplements.
