Q: Is this too big to place under an airplane seat? I need to replace my Daylite Plus.

It will work as carry on but will be too big to fit under seat.

Typically wear jeans or jean shorts when hiking, with a leather belt, I’ve never had any isues.

Q: Will the S/M size fit under an airplane seat if not too full?

Hmmmm, it will definitely fit in the overhead. under the seat would cram in there, but it would be too long and the steward and stewardesses would likely make you put it overhead.

Q: Why are there 2 sizes if the lenghth of the backpack is adjustable?

It depends on your torso size With in the s-m or the m-l You can play a little more for better adjustment and fine tuning But the small can only go from 16" up to 20" torso And the large start from 19" torso and more to about 24" Good luck
