First Impressions (and Second) - BRILLIANT SCALES
I have an existing pair of precision scales, but for me with two issues. First, they claim to measure to 0.001g (one mg), but are not consistent to better than about +/-5mg; secondly, the maximum load is a mere 20g, so their utility is minimal. So I decided to spend a very few pounds (money, not weights!) to get this little set from Uniweigh. "Only" resolving down to 0.01g (10mg), they are nonetheless easily fine-resolution for my needs. And they can weigh up to 300g.Ordered yesterday, and the parcel arrived today. Basic cheap cardboard box (no "Apple" unboxing experience here), but security sealed, and containing the device itself, and a short micro-USB cable and reasonably well made tiny Posidrive screwdriver for accessing the battery compartment. Two AAA cells were already installed in the scales, with a "pull-tab" to engage them, but I decided to start out from scratch with my favourite cells, Energiser Lithium, which last much longer, and never leak.I applied the screwdriver to the first of FOUR tiny screws on the battery door, and was both amazed and delighted, to find that what I had removed, was a proper MACHINE SCREW, and not the expected (and horrid) self-tapping plastic screw.Ditto the remaining three screws. The door then just lifts out - no latch, or easy-to-snap tabs. And YES, there were four beautiful little BRASS threaded bosses embedded in the casework.Popped out the supplied Alkaline batteries, and popped in my Lithium Energisers. Placed the door back in its slots, and then gently screwed the four machine screws back into place. It helped that the screwdriver is slightly magnetised: it held the screws beautifully.TIME TO PLAY: The scales themselves are housed in what I can only describe as a "micro-Peli-box", minus the waterproofing gasket, but a tough, non-brittle polymer, with a decent flip-catch on the lid. While I wouldn't try throwing it across a room or dropping out of a 2nd floor window onto concrete, this device feels Robust and Solid.A little plastic tray (again, a non-brittle plastic, perhaps Polyethylene), sat inverted over the Stainless Steel weighing platform, protecting it from direct pressure. A stick-on label invited me to turn the tray over, place it on the platform, and then press "TARE".A 50g calibration mass was sitting in a special storage slot, inside a tiny ziplock bag. I removed the bag, then pressed "CAL". It invited me to place the mass on the tray on the platform. After a couple of seconds, the display showed "PASS", and calibration was complete.I had a couple of 10g calibration masses from my older set of scales, and added them to the tray. 10.00g for one. 20.00g for both. And then together with the included 50g mass, 70.00g. Consistent, never a stray second decimal place. So I can't answer for its long-term stability, as I've only had it for about 6 hours, but on first impressions, I want to give this SIX stars. To recap the highlights:1) Machine Screws with Brass Bosses on the Battery Door2) "Peli Case" style casing, with robust Flip Lock3) Polypropylene Weighing Tray that doubles as Platform Protector4) Stainless Steel 50g Calibration Weight with internal Storage Slot5) 100% consistent readings so far, with known-correct itemsAnd I haven't even tried the "Piece Count" function yet. But this device could become an EDC when travelling. Seriously tempted to buy a second one right now, to keep in my suitcase (after extensive cross-checking for accuracy)!Just BRILLIANT SCALES.[EDIT] - I have since purchased not one, but TWO sets of Calibration Masses from the same maker. All I can say is these scales are SPOT ON throughout their entire range, playing with different combinations of the masses up to but not exceeding the 300g limit. The ONLY non-perfect result, was due to one of the 2g masses from the test set, not being quite perfect in its own right. While the other three 2g masses routinely and repeatedly reported "2.00g", this one rogue was (shock, horror!), reporting "2.02g". Every time. So one of my test masses was 2/100ths of a gram too heavy - but hey, the scales spotted this. And even when combined with other, heavier masses. I really wish I could allocated SEVEN stars to these amazing scales![EDIT 2] - Second set arrived today, and in just as good condition. Did exactly the same as last time, and replaced the supplied Alkaline batteries with Lithium. Same process as above regarding initial calibration, etc. If I was being REALLY picky, I'd drop my 5* score to about 4.99*, simply because, even after calibration, this second set seems totally accurate (to within that 0.01g level) up to about 50g, but starts adding a "0.02" or so once you reach 100g. TINY error, enough to "niggle", but absolutely NOT enough to matter. 0.02g out of 100 is 0.2 parts per THOUSAND. The new set will be my "travel" scales", the original (that tiny bit even more repeatable/accurate) will live on my desk. STILL highly recommend these scales.
