Can you use cast iron pans on a flat glass cooktop?

Many people use their cast iron pans on smooth glass cooktops.  It really depends on how particular you may be about small scratches that could develop on your glass cooktop over time.  The outer surface of this pan is not smooth (casted), and could potentially leave small scratches if you slide or scoot the pan around the burner surface (especially noticeable with dark reflective glass tops).

What is the depth or how deep is the skillet?

Hi Hilda! That's a great question, and so I measured it just for you. It's 50 mm deep, or if you're old school like me, that's two inches deep. Deep enough that I was able to brown 1-1/4 lbs. of ground beef with a large onion, add 1 cup of beef broth, 2 cups plus of mixed vegetables, and 5 large potatoes mashed for a Skillet Shepherd's Pie ... and even though I put the skillet on a cookie sheet, it did not bubble over. Don't expect a skillet that is smooth on the inside, but if you follow the manufacturer's instructions on cleaning, it's easy enough to clean. After washing, without submerging in water and without using soap, I used a stiff brush to remove the food (which did not stick) I dried it with a soft towel and I put the skillet on my glass-top range and on low heat for two minutes to dry it completely. Then, I lightly rubbed a spot of olive oil into it with a paper towel and it's conditioned perfectly. You will want to clean the skillet soon after cooking; I wouldn't advise leaving food in it. I used the handy silicone handle and an oven mitt to remove it from the oven, as Shepherd's Pie is quite heavy. One more thing, remember that this skillet is 12.5 inches wide and not 12 inches. That extra half inch allows for much more food. Buy this skillet, Hilda! You can't beat the price or the performance! Whether you're using a gas or electric range, and/or a glass or ceramic top, or even on the grill, this is the skillet I've always wanted! I hope this helps.

Is the bottom flat so it would be touching a ceramic stove top properly or is it up on a rim on the outside edge?

can the utopia skillet silicone handle be  removed?

It slides on & off. The point of cast iron is how well it distributes heat, so the handle gets crazy hot. Leave the silicon grip on and it would get too hot to hold as well. So you slide it on/off as needed.
