Great book, we need more!
The most glaring problem with this book is that there is only one in the series(?) so far. I buy books for my 4 year old on a whim all the time, and this one caught my eye. This has quickly made it to the top of his read list every night. He can not get enough of the book. There is not a huge moral to the story, but more about a kid using his imagination. Great art, and a quick fun read for kids, I could not recommend it more.

Tie this into your bedtime story night...
Great book! My niece really enjoyed this and asked so many questions as the main character's imagination takes him on a 007 like adventure! I could see my niece's wheels turning along with each page! The art work is very cool!

A Children's Walter Mitty
Sam seems just like any normal little boy. However, in his imagination he's actually Secret Agent Man (S.A.M.) and his mom, Kay (K) is his partner in his adventures. In SECRET AGENT MAN GOES SHOPPING FOR SHOES S.A.M. and K get new powers after getting new footwear. Along the way, S.A.M. prevents evil agents from stealing the Plans for World Domination. SECRET AGENT MAN GOES SHOPPING FOR SHOES is kind of like a children's version of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Part of the book shows actually what is going on while other parts of the story take place solely in Sam's imagination. Perhaps the biggest difference between this story and Walter Mitty is that K knows what is going on with Sam and plays along. Overall, SECRET AGENT MAN GOES SHOPPING is a cute little story about a little boy with a great imagination and a wonderful mom.

Fun and witty- nice throwback style
Summary: Secret Agent Man (aka S.A.M) and his mom, Kay (aka Kay) lead a wonderfully exciting double life- not as mom and son going about their day, but as partners as secret agents (probably unbeknownst to K., since the double life is in S.A.M's wildly vivid imagination). A simple trip to the shoe store is the beginning of S.A.M uncovering a new super power! On the surface, this is an entertaining story about a creative little boy who learns to tie his shoes. However, there is an adorable deeper story which showcases the relationship between S.A.M. and his mom. Being a mom of a little boy myself, I loved how they were buddies- just genuinely enjoying spending time with each other. Even the seemingly mundane activities of going shoe shopping, grabbing lunch on the way home, and taking a nap turned into something exciting and fun. I aspire to be a fun mom like K! (We even rock the same mom-bun!)The illustrations are great at conveying both "reality" and "how S.A.M. sees it". They go between a retro spy style (black, white, and blue "pop art") and a typical cartoon style. I loved how well they went with the voice of the text.Overall, this was such a cute and fun book. Themes included imagination, mom/son bonding, secret agents, and tying your shoes. I hope there will be more in this series!

Super clever and fun
Super clever and fun! My kids loved it and it's a pleasure to read aloud. Wynne-Jones is a master with language, and S.A.M.'s shoe shopping trip is one every kid would like to take. Highly recommended.
