Worthwhile Upgrade
I went through 3 pairs of the x Ultra 3 in somewhere north of 2k backpacking miles. I really like the 3s and hesitated to get the 4s.I’ve put in about 120 backpacking miles on the 4s, and so far they are worthwhile update. The good:While they are just a bit lighter than the 3s on paper, they feel much lighter on the foot. The upper material is much meshier than the 3s, bringing the feel closer to trail runners than robust hiking shoes.I have terrible ankles. While I felt like the 3s had very good stability, the 4s are even more stable. The outside upper edge of the sole seems flare out ever so slightly making it more difficult to roll an ankle. Also, maybe it’s just my fit, but the shoe hugs the cradle below the ankle nicely. Just a bit more support.Same great lacing system. Grip is outstanding. The not so good: As noted by another review, they do seem to run a little wide. I have to really cinch down on the laces, causing the upper tongue region to bunch up. It hasn’t caused me discomfort but I do find myself needing to adjust after a quarter mile or so, then they are fine for the duration.Another reviewer mentioned their ankle sat too low in the shoe and I can see why. It took a couple hikes for my ankle to get used to the fit but if my ankle sat any lower, it would be an issue.Overall, I’m happy with them. I give them a 4.5.EDIT: Just got back from a 350-mile thruhike with this same pair. After running through a pair (which as easily 700 backpacking miles), I still endorse them. I stand by my original review but can now confidently say that they are as durable as the 3s. The soles took a beating and held up until the tread was very low. There was some significant wear where cinching occurred, this may have been a problem if they were the GTX version and I was expecting them to be waterproof. I rolled my ankle far less in these than any other hiking shoes I've owned. These will be my go-to for the foreseeable future.

Best shoes I’ve ever had
This is my third pair of these Salomon model. By far the best shoes I ever had in my entire life. I wear them until I destroy them, and then get a new pair right away. I wear them for hiking, work, every day life. Fantastic comfort, traction and durability. Completely waterproof too. And they look good.

Worked perfectly while on Polish Boy Scout Jamboree camp in Ravens Knob NC
Salomon X Ultra 4 Hiking Shoes for Men, Quiet Shade/Black/Quiet Shade, Size 10First off, if you haven’t been to BSA Raven's Knob in North Carolina, it’s an absolutely stunning camp! Our son, who’s a Polish Boy Scout, recently returned from a two-week Jamboree there, and we had the chance to visit during the halfway point. Naturally, I took plenty of photos to capture the experience.1. Leg Day, Every Day: The camp is set in a gully, which means getting anywhere involves a trek downhill, across flat ground, and then uphill again—whether you're heading to meals, parades, or the pond. It’s a workout just getting around!2. Built to Last: Our son is tough on his gear—he treats his shoes like a rental car. But these held up flawlessly, proving just how durable they are.3. Water-Resistant: These shoes kept his feet dry, even when wading through puddles. They're water-resistant up to the ankle, which is a lifesaver in wet conditions.4. Easy to Clean: After a day of roughing it, a quick wash with light soap and water, followed by drying in the sun, had these shoes looking good as new.5. Comfortable Fit: Make sure you get your feet measured before buying. The comfort level is top-notch, but the right fit is essential.6. All-Around Durability: These shoes aren’t just tough; they’re built to withstand anything your adventures throw at them.

Decent shoes, held up hiking in the Mojave
I did a 30 mile hike thru the Mojave desert on rough terrain. A lot of volcanic rock and loose mine tailings. I had broken the shoes in for a month prior to the trip. By the end of the trip, my feet were minimally sore in the toe box area since so much of the hiking was on inclines and declined where you’re sliding forward or aft in the shoes. Traction was excellent on rock scrambled and sliding down slopes Od loose gravel and rock. The quick lace system is probably not that quick to use, roll up and put into the lace garages. However they are better than regular laces for keeping them from getting hung up on things or coming loose. After the trip, I was surprised to see the tread looked to be in great condition still.

Run Small
I usually buy size12 which my first pair of these were and were small. The second pair I bought was 12.5 and fit perfectly. Now after 2 years, this is my third pair of size 12.5 Salomon X ultra 4’s and I love them.

Would be useful as torture device for Inquisition
I bought these shoes for a trip that would include miles of walking in both urban and wooded settings. I tried them on upon receipt and they felt OK and were true to size. I wore them around town for a few days before my trip and noted that the tongue needed frequent straightening but otherwise they seemed OK. I was wrong...On the first day's hike, I discovered that not only does the tongue persistently move out of position, but the laces become loose and need very frequent attention. The friction system that is supposed to hold the laces tight just doesn't work. Also, the left shoe started rubbing against the bone of my ankle in a very painful way, to the point where I had to buy a new pair of shoes. I don't know why it took several miles of hiking before this issue revealed itself.I tried to wear them again a few days later on a shorter walk but all the issues remained, although it took about 2 miles before the assault on my ankle began anew.I was very surprised that shoes of this low quality are made by Salomon. I've owned other Salomon shoes and boots and was always pleased.
