Can a HDWI cable be used with this system?

Yes, a HDMI cable can be used. One cable out from the cable box or whatever to the speaker and another from the speaker to the TV.

Is it better to send the audio from the TV to the sound bar OR send the audio visual signal from the satellite receiver through the sound bar to TV?

I'm no expert, but I would do the first (audio from TV to sound bar). This allows everything connected to the TV (DVD's, blu-rays, etc) to use the sound bar. I used an optic cable, that I add lying around, that appeared not to work at first until I accidentally push it hard causing it to connect properly with a snap, and then it work just fine.

So it sounds like this isn't truly wireless...it still has to connect with the USB cable and the audio cable. Is that correct?

Correct, unfortunately it still has to be connected to the TV via cables.
