Q: How many gallons can this filter treat? Understanding this depends on water conditions,best and worst case both would be nice to know.

I don't know. I filter a gallon every few days and change filter every 6 months or when I begin to get a "stale" odor. I use a water liberty filter...like the Zen filter. I will scrub the dome filter with a sponge and rinse well about every 3-4 gallons filtered or, agai, when I detect the "stale' odor.

Q: Does this filter out ecoli?

Probably not (100%)...however, since the filter IS impregnated with silver, ANY and ALL pathogens that may come into contact with the silver will be destroyed (explode).

Q: How should I prepare the ceramic dome before using it the first time?

Soak it in warm water for about 15 minutes.
