Great Value for the Money
I moved from an apartment that had a gas range to one with an electric range. When I wanted to boil water, the element had to heat up before the water could heat up. Wastes a lot of time and probably electricity. Same for the microwave. I wasn't sure if an electric kettle was the answer, so I chose this small, inexpensive one. It's really terrific! Since I only use single servings of boiled water, I was concerned about having to have a minimum amount and wasting water. It turns out the minimum water level is about 1-3/4 cups. A perfect amount for tea, soups, etc., with maybe a little left over. It boils the minimum water within 2 minutes, a full pot in about 5 minutes, depending on the temperature of the water you start with. Mine from the fridge. If I had one complaint it would be the length of the cord. It's very short, and I'm guessing this is to discourage you from filling and pouring with the kettle plugged in (you're not supposed to do that). I agree with what some other people have said about a magnetic connection in the power cord, but what do you really want for eleven bucks? There are kettles with them, you just have to pay for it. You would never expect one at this price point. As for other complaints listed in these reviews, I'll address them: it does smell the first few times you use it. But those first few times are supposed to! That's why the instructions tell you to boil two or three kettles full of water and rinse it out several times after. After that, while you can still smell plastic if you stick you nose in it, it doesn't leach into the smell or taste of the water. Another poor review said the water was yellow. That was either a defective kettle, or the person couldn't tell that it was the light reflecting off the beige plastic inside making the water inside look yellow. The water actually is not colored. And for the people who say they need to boil their water to kill all myriad of bacteria, then an electric kettle with shut-off safety features was just not a good choice. It's not a bad product. ONE CAVEAT! Do not rely on the pre-printed markings for measurement. They are way off. Otherwise, I'm pleased with my kettle and I'm hoping it lasts a long time. For the price, it's more than worth it. UPDATE 12/22/09 -- Just thought I'd add that now, almost three years later, my kettle is still working and I still think it was a great purchase. UPDATE 8/8/11 -- Still working, still loving it!

Lasts forever—13 years & still going!
Amazon says I bought this in Feb 2009. That makes this item 13 years old at the time of this writing. It still works just as well as the day I bought it. This means I’ve used this at least 3-4x a day for 13 years. What I specifically like about this kettle is that it does NOT have a base that you set it on. I hate the idea of fumbling to find the notch to seat the kettle on a base. Plus the idea that dribbling water will get on the base seems like a bad idea. It heats quickly, has a little light when on, and automatically shuts off after a rolling boil. It is slightly smaller at 1L rather than 1.3 or 1.5 and I like it that way since I don’t usually need a full pot and I can more readily meet the “min” water level and since it’s smaller, I can get to get a quicker boil. Yes. It is entirely plastic except for the heating element which is metal. If you don’t mind that and you hate the ones with a base, you absolutely should buy this. For reference, I keep mine always plugged in (except for cleaning days) and I use a container to bring the water to the kettle, instead of bringing the kettle to the sink. I think this has contributed to extending the life of the product since I’m not always plugging and unplugging it. After 13 years, the only problem I have run into (just recently) is that when the cord is a little kinked, it won’t turn on so I have to make sure to unkink it. I plan to buy a replacement plug and keep on using this…Indefinitely. EDIT 2023–replacement cord purchased and it works beautifully.

Easy and fast, but boil-stop too late.
Unlike other reviews I have read, I did not find any "plastic" taste or smell from this product. In fact that description in some reviews almost kept me from buying it, but for the price I gave it a shot anyway. The kettle boils water very fast, and because of that it has made the wait between waking up and my morning tea very short. Like many tea drinkers I like the water very hot, but not boiling. Since the first couple of weeks the boil-stop mechanism has not worked in a timely fashion, but even when it did, the water was already boiling, and even if briefly, I don't prefer my tea water that hot. When the water boils, it can alter the tea flavor and add a few extra minutes between pouring and sipping. Plus (as many of you may know) extra boiling eats up the oxygen in the water. Since there is only a small window between when the water is very hot, and when it boils, I just monitor it myself now, to make sure it doesn't boil. It really isn't that inconvenient because just before the kettle water gets really hot, the simmering makes a noticeable sound that calls me over in plenty of time to flip the convenient switch on the back turning it off. I gave this kettle four stars because it's lightweight, easy to store and clean, and the boil-stop will work after it boils a minute or so, so it's still safe if for some reason I forgot about it. I have owned this product for 3 months with multiple uses most days and haven't noticed any other defects whatsoever. Good product, great price!

Great product for the price
I got this one because I have had two before and still have one. There real reason is I lost the cord of the old one. so now I have a spare. I would buy this one again in a heart beat reasons: 1. it is attractive 2. reasonably priced, 3. speed of which it heats up 4. Durability on how long the heating element last.
