Very pleased with purchase so far! - I'm one to research the heck out of things, and I narrowed my wired dog fence system down to two and chose this. Two weeks later I couldn't be more pleased. I wanted smallest collar unit to be least cumbersome to my dog, yet durable and most features and level of settings. I went with pro grade option and 1,000' of cable. Was surprised when that came on just one spool- great, no splice needed in middle of run! Also it doesn't say it, but it *does* come with a surge protector, which otherwise costs about $25. I rented EZ Trencher to lay cable but that was tough in soggy lawn- kept clogging with mud. Tears up the lawn a bit. You'll have this regardless of fence system you buy of course. But following the training plan and having a system with 7 levels of "correction" and a beep-only mode allowed me to have my dog fully trained in less than a week. We did the beep-only training for 3 full days, emphasizing the praise when running back away from wire. I was careful to try to avoid her approaching the line gradually from parallel, and rather tried to have her approach perpendicularly so she'd know exactly where the "bad" place was and to turn 180 deg back from it. On day 4 I turned the collar to shock, I mean correction, level 3. She's a stubborn but smart little 45 lb pit bull mix so I wasn't sure that would be enough, but didn't want to overdue it either. I first tested it on my arm and was surprised that it was a very low level shock, like a tickle. (Nothing like putting your finger in a light socket, that's for sure.). So I put collar on dog and eventually she wandered close to the line, and I was shocked when she was shocked and let out a loud yelp while jumping a couple feet in the air! Geez I felt really bad, honestly, but hoped that was a major learning point (which it was!) and I proceeded to reprogram the collar down to lowest correction setting of 1. We then did a few days of training still on a long leash and if she got too close she'd jump back as soon as the unit beeped. On day 8 I wasn't thinking and didn't notice that another family member took the collar off her, and took her out on long leash. She saw deer and bolted at them, ripping leash out of my hand. But she stopped right before the flagged, and just barked and whined at the deer 30' away. Then is when I knew this is really working, and I started off-leash training the next day. I'm now at day 11 in total which includes 3-4 days of off-leash and it's going great so far. No breaches, even when barreling full speed to the line with temptations of more deer, squirrels, neighbors and dogs. She has hound mixed in and a very strong prey drive so frankly I'm shocked this is working so well. So far so good! Units works exactly as reported. Default range from wire (set to 10) activates the collar precisely 5' from the wire thru my entire 750' run. Wire held up great- had no breaks even with the trencher often putting stress on the wire. I think the instructions are very good. I did not need to call their support line for anything. But one that that was confusing me for a while was the listing of the 3.different levels of dogs (timid, active, and I think hyper) and then the various shock level setting under each of those, but how do you select 'active" for instance. Eventually I noticed that "active" was written on my box's packaging label, so those are how the systems come and luckily the active one was the proper one for my size/type dog. So hopefully there's no letdown with the equipment or my dog starts breaching the fence. If anything like that happens I'll update this review, but right now I'm extremely please that I selected the Extreme brand dog fence. And bonus of made in USA. Thanks. ***Update 4 months later*** Happy to report the system has continued to work great and the collar battery was still working after 4 full months. (but I could hear that the beep was weaker when I tested the collar today, so I'm replacing the battery now just to be safe. I hope the replacements last as long as the original!) My dog only breached the fence once in the 4 months, and that was shortly after installing it, when I think she "forgot" after seeing one of her dog friends being walked down the street. Hasn't left the yard since which is really impressive being the daily teasings she has of neighborhood dogs, deer, etc. Great that she can tear around our acre of yard freely, and we can take her less frequently to the dog park for exercise. Looking forward to the warmer weather and her hanging out with us on the patio without needing to be leashed. Happy customer, happy dog. Review: Great product and service! - I did a lot of research before purchasing an underground fence. Based on the reviews and that fact that we wanted to run the wire through 3/4 acre of woods - we wanted the 14 gauge wire and with this product we didn't have to purchase anything separately. The product was shipped promptly and arrived ahead on Friday instead of Monday. I know other reviews said it didn't come with instructions but ours did. With both installation and training instructions. We spent the day Saturday running the wire and placing the flags. The spool of wire unrolled easily. I did have to get more landscape staple as so much of the wire is in the woods, and I bought more flags as well so the woods area limit is clearly shown. We wanted a backyard only solution and didn't want to double the wire so we ended up running the wire up the downspout to the roof with zip ties, along the ridge of the roof (where the ridge vent is) and back down the other end of the house to the other downspout. It was a solution I found online and it worked perfectly. She can still get out of the house and has access only to the backyard. The installation went very smoothly (although I do HATE when my husband is on the roof!) and tested successfully on the first try. Our dog is a rescue - 3 year old female border collie, greyhound, lab mix. She's extremely fast and loves to chase squirrels, rabbits and anything else that moves. In addition, there is a den of fox across the street and they are always hunting in the woods behind our house. She would constantly take off and go through the woods into various neighbors yards chasing things. I was very concerned that she would just run right through the electric fence - while the training documentation that came with it is pretty good - I called their customer service department for advice. Our dog had a very bad experience with an electric fence as a pup and we were told by the previous owner that she refused to go in the backyard so they couldn't use it. The man I spoke with was very knowledgeable and helpful. We talked through the training steps and he was so helpful and spent a long time discussing with me our dogs temperament, my concerns about her breaching and the various steps I should take if that happened. Well, it couldn't have gone better! It only took 3 days to train her. She obviously remembered having the electric fence from before - so that may have helped. We used lots of treats and playing and encouragement to make sure she understood before we tried it off leash. She ran through 3 times over the 3 days and we backed up the training with treats playing and encouragement each time. Ultimately we only had to set it on the second to lowest setting. It's been a few weeks now and she's hasn't breached once since the first 3 days. In the ultimate test, last night I let her out before bed and the fox appeared in the next yard over - barking and trying to coax her to him and away from the kits who were out with him. I was sure she would run through but she stopped short the of wire and just barked for a bit and then came back to me. She got plenty of treats and praise for being so good! It's wonderful to be able to let her out and roam in her 3/4 acre zone without fear of her taking off like a shot. Highly recommend. This product and their customer service is excellent! UPDATE May 2020: Still LOVE my Extreme fence. It has been perfect for 2 years. Then I did notice that the receiver on her collar seemed to be behaving a little strangely. Couldn't be sure there was actually an issue. She breached one day - which she NEVER does so I wondered if it was not beeping. Then she was on the deck and yelped like she got zapped even through she was nowhere near the edge. Then it happened again a week later so I was worried it might be something faulty in the receiver. I called customer service and even though we couldn't determine if it was actually an issue with the receiver, they immediately sent me a new receiver at no cost! They were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

It works well for my 60 lbs shepard mix dog!
I have about 1 acre and my dog was trained in less than 2 weeks. I didn't even follow the training advice perfectly. My dog is scared of a lot of things anyways, so a few very light corrections (she didn't yelp at all, just quickly backed away from the fence line), she understood her boundaries. Just the other day there was another dog near the fence and she bolted at it like she was going to cross the boundary but she didn't! This system is such a good value as compared to the professional installs. Everything is well made and well documented. Of course, it's also a lot of work getting the wire underground. My advice is to use a lawn edger to open up a small slit for the standard (not professional) grade wire that only needs to be buried ~1 inch. You can use a notched stick or even your finger tips to shove the wire into the slit, although sometimes I had to use a pick mattock to open the earth a bit more where the edger didn't fare well. UPDATE 10/01/2019: Had to replace the collar battery. I took out the original blue battery and tried to figure out how to replace it, as there were no clear markings on it for reordering. Found one battery on amazon that looked correct, just received it today and nope, too big. What is going on?! Well, looks like the original blue battery was actually 4 LR44 coin cells stacked on top of each other and wrapped in blue plastic! It's taken a while to figure this out, now I'm going to try loose LR44 cells and stack them on top of each other. Hope it works, my dog is starting to test the boundary as my original battery is long dead... I'm knocking the stars down to 4, because I think the company should clearly mark on the blue battery pack something that makes sense for reordering!

Very happy and my dog loves his new freedom from his chain.
I purchased Perimeter Pro Grade Ultra Comfort Contact System to replace a cheaper system I had installed several months ago from another retailer. The previous system was riddled with problems, interference, sporadic collar activation, constant wire breaks and in general just not safe for my dog. I should have returned it in the beginning. The signs and symptoms started almost immediately. I guess I was just too tired and lazy after spending the weekend installing the original one. I might add the customer service for the cheaper system was non existent. I had full intention of sending the new pro grade system back, should it not perform to my standards. This new system is significantly better and has none of the issues my previous system had. This system works perfectly! I also had several questions about the new system. I made several phone calls to the seller and was surprised that an actual knowledgeable person answered the phone. It's nice to know if any problems pop up, I won't be stuck in e-mail hell while waiting for a response. I ruled out the wireless fence based upon the inflexibility of a circular wireless zone system and its lack of customization. Many of the reviews I saw were extremely bad. I have a smaller dog and did not want such a large collar on him. One of my neighbors had used a wireless dog fence and informed me of the sporadic nature of the fence. His dogs got warned in several areas of the house. With the shape of my yard, a wireless dog fence system would also not work properly based on the fact that you can only make a limited circle containment zone up to 100 feet. The 100 foot zone would have put my dog 20 feet onto my neighbor's property and 20 feet out into the street, unless I limited his play space even more. I considered a professionally installed system but was aghast at the estimates that the professional companies had given me. They ranged in price from $1200 to $2000 dollars! This was not an option and the installation of these fences is not really complex enough to justify such high margins, in my opinion. Even after all the problems I had with my previous containment system, I knew that there must be something better available on the market. Pro Grade Electric Dog Fence system. Upon examining the Pro Grade System, I found the general construction and appearance of durability seemed much better than the previous system I had installed. I always believed you get what you pay for, and in many cases buying the cheaper option is not always the best. You wind up paying more when you find out a product doesn't work the way you expected, you end up just having to buy the more expensive option and are stuck with the inferior previous product. This holds even truer now and even more important with the safety of my dog. The Pro Grade system didn't have any of the problems I experienced with the previous system I had installed. It works! The collar activated precisely at the boundaries with zero sporadic areas in the yard like the other system had. It also worked flawlessly around the areas the fence ran parallel against the cables and utilities. I was very pleased with the accessories that came with the pro grade system: heavy duty perimeter wire, 50 feet of twisted wire, very heavy duty flags, and an extremely beefy surge protector. I have listed the positives in bullet points for ease of reading. *Extremely well made - Actually made in the U.S.A. in comparison to other systems I had looked at that were made in China. This product screams of quality and performance from initial inspection. *Heavy duty installation supplies - 14 Gauge water proof wire is included, also pre twisted heavy wire helped make installation from the transmitter a breeze. I actually had to order a bit more 14 twisted dog fence wire from here, the seller was nice enough to send me a complete 100 foot continuous roll, so I didn't have to make wire connections. *Extra heavy duty dog fence surge protector with a Lifetime warranty *Transmitter has an easy to use digital display system making it easy to adjust the distance your dog has to stay back from the line *Lifetime Limited Warranty on the electronics and 3 years Parts and Labor Warranty. All in all I am definitely happy with this system, it has only been a couple of days since I have installed it, but I can tell it's going to hold up.

Serious flaws after the one year mark, read before you buy.
TL;DR "Be very very very gentle when tightening the casing after inserting batteries into the unit. Again, the plastic is extremely weak and any cracks will essentially guarantee the death of your expensive device. Despite the device being waterproof, it cracks very easily, and once cracked moisture will seep in and kill this unit. Warranty is limited, after 1 year, expect to pay a minimum of $75 for a receiver replacement. Full Summary: I've owned this product for a little over a year and I'll be explaining what I like about it, but more importantly, some of its downfalls and what you can/should do to make the most of this product if you absolutely have to buy it. I will say from experience, the majority of the package works as intended. That being the digital transmitter, which you have to keep inside or get a weather box, the boundary wires, and the twisted wire (which I have not used, mind you), but I assume it will work well as it seems to be made of good quality. Just an FYI, the warranty does not cover the wires, so I am thankful I have not had any issues with the black boundary wire yet. Where this product starts to show it's weakness is in the "Waterproof Active collar. Honestly, all the pitfalls really stem from here. Let's start off by listing some of its features, it is listed to be submersible to 10 feet; however, I would not test this due to some build quality issues, and warranty issues I'll get to later on. They do come with a set of rubber comfort covers that are included for comfort, but they do wear pretty fast and you have to replace them. I highly recommend the comfort covers, as I initially put them on my dog without them and he started to get a nasty burn on his neck. The same happened with my other dog, so I know this was not an isolated incident. It's true, the collar/receiver is very light and is listed to weight only 1.1 Ounce, it almost feels hollow. It takes a proprietary 6v battery, which is listed to last around 4 months if your dog knows not to get close to the boundary. Let's quickly go over that again. • Proprietary battery • Not really optional covers • "waterproof" here is where we get to the biggest problem of all. The blue plastic casing of this receiver is very cheaply made As many others have pointed out in the reviews, it will crack. It is not a matter of if, but when it cracks. Remember, even if you bought the version with a 10 year warranty, it is a limited warranty. This means if the product cracks due to a defect you can get a free exchange within the 1st year. After the 1st year, you still have to pay a whopping $75 out of pocket. I feel like the description should mention that, or their website at least, it feels a little misleading… When not if, the casing starts to crack it will no longer be waterproof. Rust can and will get inside and stop the product from working. I live in Southern California and it has only rained I want to say a maximum of 5 times where I have lived within the last year, yet this product only started to malfunction a month or so ago. So I am guessing normal moisture in the morning damaged the product from inside once the product cracked. They really push the waterproof feature, so they want you to get it wet, which will most likely hurt the unit once it is cracked (inevitable, especially after a year). You may by now have realized the overall problem with this receiver… it is meant a perpetual money sink after you have bought the original product, like buying ink for a printer. Only in this case you are paying such a high premium for the product… you shouldn't have to continue to sink more money, but you do. The collar is built to break and if you get it replaced before the warranty.. (use that information as you please). Then they still expect you to spend $$$ on the proprietary battery and the not so optional rubber covers. Unfortunately, most of these good reviews are most likely within the first year where no issues occur and if they do, they get a replacement free of charge, which sadly does not paint an accurate picture of the real cost of this product over the long run, regardless of what type of warranty you have with it. Lucky, If you already bought the product or you're in a niche situation like me where this product is a necessary evil, here are some solutions I have found that can help you circumvent some of these issues. #1 You do not need to buy proprietary batteries. You can search the comments or do your own research, I wouldn't want this review to be taken down for recommending another product. In short, you can stack the generic version, tape em up, and put them in the receiver and they work splendidly. Sure they may last slightly less time than the proprietary one, but they are a fraction of the cost and are still marginally more bang for your buck, seriously. #2After training most dogs eventually learn to stay away from the wire just by hearing the noise, Which means you don't need to replace the black soft covers on the prongs after they stop conducting, as the sound itself will keep your dog away. You can just loosen the collar as well. Amazon actually sells some aftermarket tips in packs at almost half the price of a single one if you were to buy direct from these guys. #3 Be very very very gentle when tightening the casing after inserting batteries into the unit. Again, the plastic is extremely weak and any cracks will essentially guarantee the death of your expensive device. You may even want to put a thin strip of tape around the casing to further protect it from water/environment. It's quite easy to remove with scissors and it's only someone you will have to do every few months. Bonus for #3 This receiver is confirmed to receive the following frequencies 7khz & 4 kHz, which means you may be able to use an aftermarket receiver as a backup or replacement. Amazon does over free returns so you can just test a variety of them out, and if they don't work you can return them free of charge. This is a must if you are over your 1-year warranty. I am currently looking into this. Summary: Would have been a solid A+ product; however, the weakest link brings it all down. The collar/receiver, it's a huge money sink, and the 10-year limited warranty is a joke and borderline false advertising, mind you the only thing it really covers after a year is the Digital Transmitter and receiver, and again you will be paying a minimum of 75$ for the receiver with this limited "warranty." I have no idea how much you would have to pay for the Digital transmitter, as it is not sold individually, and can only be obtained with one of the packs/kits. So who knows how much they will have you pay for it under your "warranty." Update: instead of the 1-2 days replacement came on about a week later. No collar included, just the transmitter. You also have to pay out of pocket to return ship back the transmitter. They still have not included an invoice.

Purchased this because it looked like the transmitter on the collar was smaller than other products, and the quality of the perimeter wire was better - both turned out to be true. Installation was easy - I used a drill at one end and a teenage boy at the other to make the twisted wire pair. The instructions indicate you need 12 twists per inch but that seemed excessive to me so I stopped at around 8, and it worked fine. I bought another 500ft of wire from Home Depot of the same gauge (but thinner insulation - the wire that came with the kit was far superior) and additional waterproof splice connectors, running a total of about 750ft around my yard. I also bought some plastic tube and threaded some of the perimeter wire through it to lay across the driveway - had to use an angle grinder to cut a small channel through the driveway and then topped off the channel with premix mortar from a tube, and then black roof sealant to hide the channel as much as possible. Seems to be holding up 6 months later. I dug the wire into my lawn by hand (about 300 ft) and the rest in dirt at the back and side. Easy enough to do (if the ground is soft) with a straight edge shovel and some elbow grease if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. I went down about 2-3 inches which seems ample. We have a female Shiba Inu, notorious for being independent minded and hard to train, and almost as stubborn as my wife. We followed the training guide fairly closely though not religiously, and I have to say it works. Set the shock level at 4 as I did not want to start small and have to work up to a higher shock level in case it didn't work. She had to get zapped a couple of times to understand the new boundary (the dog, not my wife) but after that she responded to the warning beeps. She even responded to the beeps when I was holding the collar and she was not wearing it, so clearly the concept works. She has not tried to cross the boundary even with the temptation of passing dogs, people and squirrels so we feel fairly confident about leaving her in the yard now although we still keep an eye on her periodically when she is outside. Given that we started training when the dog was about 6 months old and she is now just over a year, I think this will continue to work for us and I feel confident in the longevity of the hardware, but time will tell as always. I will post an update if there are any longer term things that arise that might be of interest to other prospective buyers. Thanks to the previous reviewers that helped me in my search and I can add my recommendation.

A godsend that so far works perfectly
We had a single, lovely rescue dog that had no interest in escaping until we rescued another dog who was used to life as a street urchin and decided immediately that he would love nothing more than to rove far and wide in search of adventure. We have three beautiful acres completely fenced, mostly with a horse type fence made from steel well drill pipe and square wire mesh. Quite sturdy, except it is very easy for an enterprising young dog to dig UNDER the mesh and escape from just about anywhere. And they often did, in pursuit of gophers who ran from them through the fence, or just as a way of exploring the larger world. We wanted them to retain the run of the whole property, and we finally resorted to the idea of radio shock collars only when nothing else worked. The last straw was them being found wandering the main road nearby just waiting to get hit by a car, as so often happens here to other wildlife. I looked for something that was made in the USA, or at least owned by a US company, for reasons of support and quality, and this was it. Well worth the extra money. I ordered the above-ground rated wire just to get it going quickly, and I was also afraid of gophers possibly eating through the wire underground in some places. I strung it along the top of the fence, all 1,500 feet of it, and expoxied it in recesses in the formed concrete slabs of the driveways to get past the two driveway gates, and then carried it inwards as an inert twisted pair through some conduit and concrete and through the wall of the garage where the transmitter was to be located and powered. (you must put the transmitter and lightning surge suppressor indoors; they are not outdoor rated, this part will take most of your time if you do it right.) All in all it took about three days to do everything and test it, mostly due to the special bits where it is not just hung on the fence with some bailing wire. The instructions give you a two week training regime which I can only describe as being written for 1950s housewives that have nothing to do all day but keep a close eye on their dogs. It IS fair and equitable for the dogs and you need to do at least a bare minimum of introducing them to the fence first with just the audio warning and pulling them away from it, and then putting the collars on the lowest setting to allow them to experience what I can describe after trying it myself as an annoying tickle, or the feeling of a big insect buzzing around the electrode spot. This was a relief to us as the first setting was in no way painful. We did try the second level once on one collar when one dog was not responsive to level 1, and that's all it took. After that we put it back on level one, and we're happy to say that's all that's ever been needed for either dog. We had only about two to three days to condense the training regime down before we both had to go back to work after a long thanksgiving holiday, and I am pleased to say it worked perfectly. They have not escaped a single time, and even when I walk out the gate to get the mail and they want to follow, they will not get within 10 feet of the fence, ever. Where they used to put their front paws up on the fence menacingly to bark at passers by, they now sit farther back and carry on with it there. I can only describe it as a small miracle, especially given the shorter training period we had with them. Do be aware that you need to remove the collars nightly so as not to develop bed sore type spots on their skin, and we rotate where the collar is clocked on their neck each morning from where it was the day before to prevent any one spot from being continually pressured. After a few months we don't see any issues. If you're not willing to do this daily then please don't buy this or any other shock collar system. We take them off every evening after we let them in, and put them on in the morning after they have had breakfast. A small price to pay for them to have their freedom and us our peace of mind. Since they hardly ever trigger the collars anymore, the batteries seem to be lasting a long time, though I will be ordering some replacements soon. It is likely that even without the collars they will not approach the fence, but one day if we stop using the collars one might accidentally run up to the fence chasing something and then figure out that he might be able to get out again, so we put the collars on them religiously. Now we have two dogs who can occupy themselves on three big acres in a safe manner while we are gone during the day, and then come in and be loved when we get home at night. Thank you Extreme Dog Fence.

heavy duty but still tricky to install, batteries are a downer
I have purchased 2 other hidden dog fence systems like this and this one is definitely the most heavy duty (I paid for the heavy duty one), so you get what you pay for. The customer service is good and they where patient with me with all my dumb questions that I had, although I did have one collar not work and they did not replace it as the warranty states. The system works fairly well, but is is not perfect. I have a 3/4 acre yard and this took me several hours (2 days really) to set up, but that is because I tried it out for a few days before I buried it. In hind site I would recommend NOT burying the wire, because I had a break in the line about a year later and I had to pull the line out of the ground to fix it, and that was a big pain. I have just let the wire lay in the grass, it is hard to detect, but yet easy to retrieve. My biggest issue with the system is the battery. The batteries are VERY expensive (about $10 a battery) and those batteries last just a few weeks. I am disappointed that the company did not design their system to work with other lithium batteries (like the ones in a camera), instead they have a special custom battery which is impossible to find, and rather expensive and I have not been impressed with how long they last. The other system that I purchased the wires kept breaking, this wire is very sturdy. I did not give it 5 stars because for me the programming of the receiver to the collar was very confusing, even after I called customer service and they walked me through it, it is confusing, and the batter does not deserve 5 stars. I have a hard time telling if it is adjusting distance or strength of the shock. The other systems that I used had a turn dial system that was very straight forward, this one not so much. But after calling customer support I did get set correctly. The other issues that I did not expect, is that my dog has learned when the battery is dead, and the collar does not "beep" on him, then he knows that he has free reign to escape, rather annoying.
