Q: What is the benefit of the dowel?

I already have 6 pairs so I can have spare while I wash the other pairs.The dowels prevent the bars from slipping from you hands even if the thumb is not actively involved in the lift or grip. Extremely helpful in deadlifts, pullups, standing machine shoulder shrug, overhead shoulder press, bench press, one-arm dumbbell row, and even dumbbell bicep curls. Hope that helps.

One size fits all - the wrist wrap is adjustable.

Q: Does the buckle dig into your wrist? and How do you rate it for doing exercises like pull-ups (where the strap folds inward, under and over)?

The buckle should not dig into the wrist as the material covering the buckle is a very thick, plush neoprene. It can be used for pull-ups but is more specifically design for rowing movements instead.
