You don't NEED any. The question you are really asking is "How much sand do I WANT?" and that's between you and god, no one here has those types of answers. Most of us just trying to get by, one grain at a time.

Q: Why does Lowe’s have this priced at less than $4 and you are asking for $35?

Thank you. I almost thought I was getting a bargain at 30 bucks as the Wal something or other has it priced at 50 bucks. Lowes is less than a mile away from my house and I don't have to put some delivery person through having to carry this stuff up my driveway. And after a bit more checking it seems that Home Depot has it for 3 bucks a bag.

Yes it is 50 lbs and free shipping, they say 2lbs due to free shipping, this sand only cost $3.75 at Lowes or Home Depot... so they are charging you $31.24 extra.

I disagree with the other answers, if it fills 1/2 cubic feet like the manufacturer/seller says. You're absolutely right, sand is heavy -- people underestimate how heavy sand and even water is (5 gallons of water at room temp is 40+ lbs).The answer to your question depends on the dimensions of your tank of course, but a typical 10 gallon tank is 10" x 20" x 12", where the 12" is the height. If this is your case, filling it to 6" of sand requires (10/12)' * (20/12)' * (6/12)' of sand (notice that's in feet, not inches). Which simplifies to (5/6)*(5/3)*(1/2) = 25/36 = ~0.70 cubic feet.Thus, if this product is 1/2 cubic feet, you'll need about 1.5 bags. Just remember, the calculation above is only true if your tank's dimensions are about 10" x 20" x 12".
