Material Failure: New Balance Makes Good on product failure
Material Failure: Two pair were purchased in February 2014, one brown pair for winter season with long pants and one grey pair for summer season with shorts. The fit was excellent for a size 8.5D and along with the price was a good guy. The brown pair were worn every day until May when one shoe had the leather tear out on the instep neat the rubber sole. It seems to me that the leather in the brown pair was different and inferior to the grey pair. New Balance made good on the material failure and gave me a voucher for the full price. The brown pair were replaced with MX623LT2, a waterproof model with smooth leather uppers. See my failure review on that model. The grey pair were worn every day from May until October with no failures. I don't have confidence that the grey pair will last through the next season.

Older NB623 version was OK. The first pic is of one NB used to make. It was a pretty good shoe
Unfortunately, I didn't buy my NB 623 from Amazon, but I have experience over the last three years with these shoes. I originally bought NB623 from a referee store, because I thought referees needed good shoes. The first year, my two pair of the shoes were fine. The next year, they were too narrow, so I had to stretch them - I have a 4e foot. This year I bought one pair to see if they were still to narrow. The new NB 623 shoe is worthless. It seems to be made by someone who has never used their hands before. It looks crappy, and has the worst insole ever. I've worn mine two times, and they look like they've been 500 miles on dirt paths. The toe box is just a huge floppy thing, and there is no ankle support in this loose boxy shoe. Also the easy slip in heel has been replaced with a unlace your shoe high backed heel, making it a task to put them on in a hurry. If you are a referee buying these shoes for running a lot, and have to have a shoe that has no logo in black, please get another shoe and paint over the logo. In my opinion, you would be better off getting a better shoe and painting it black, or just go get a shoe and glue on some rubber tire treads for soles, rather than waste your money on these NB 623's. My first pic shows a worn many times old 623 model. It held up well and still looks nice after a year of wearing. The second pic is after wearing the new version NB 623 twice. You be the judge. I'm shopping for better quality.

Good looking shoe, but way too tight in the "toe box" area.
I bought these shoes as my old, American-made New Balance cross trainers were wearing out after 6 years of use. My old shoes are a 10-1/2 W, so I bought the same size of this model. I can say for sure that the New Balance Men's MX623v2 Cross-Training Shoe is much, much tighter in the "toe-box" area, and the length is also much shorter, than my old pair, which fit perfectly out of the box. (I am normally a size 10 EE, when I get a proper fit.) If I had known that they'd be this tight, then I would have ordered an 11 W, a full size larger than what I normally wear. I am returning them, however, which Amazon has made quite easy to do, as I don't trust that the 11 W would fit in the toe box area either. I bought the brown and red, model, which was quite handsome in appearance, but I just couldn't suffer them any more after wearing them for more than an hour. I would only consider these if I had a narrow, flat foot and ordered at least a size larger. I'm quite disappointed with New Balance for selling these and not sizing them correctly.

You can't do any worse. Sole completely delaminated from upper, w/next to no tread wear.
(I was miles!!) I'm using these as a cross training shoe for gym and walking. I've put a healthy set of hours/miles on these and they do not show any appreciable signs of tread wear or upper deterioration. Padded adequately and sufficient lateral support in the heal, coming from an ex runner.6/22/17: Revising dramatically my review. The entire sole delaminated spontaneously. It was if there were no adhesive at all, between the upper and sole. I used windshield RTV sealer, to glue the shoe back together. I'm only doing this, because I use these shoes for gym equipment and casual walks.

New Balance no longer stands behind their shoes.
I just got off the phone with New Balance customer support, and I am not impressed. This my second pair of New Balance 623's. My first pair lasted 9 months as my daily shoe. That's a remarkably long life for a shoe.I purchased this shoe back in October (same size, same width as the pair that lasted 9 months). And since my old shoes were still kicking, they sat in my closet unused for a few months. When my old shoes gave out last Thursday, I pulled these out of the closet. On day 3, they developed a rip near the toe. Amazon won't take them back after the 30 day return window, so I contacted New Balance. At the very least I hoped they could send me a replacement right shoe to go with my brand new left.I was wrong. Apparently they don't stand behind their produce after 30 days either. They eventually agreed to send me a coupon of less than the value I spent on these shoes to purchase a replacement pair from their website at MSRP (50% more than they are priced here). Any right now, my size is out of stock there. So I'm crossing my fingers that my size comes back into stock before the coupon expires.Needless to say I'm not impressed. I've never had a problem with their shoes before. But if this is how they treat loyal customers when something goes wrong, maybe New Balance isn't for me.

Great all-purpose trainers
Great all-purpose trainers. I don't do running but these provide plenty of support, aren't too heavy and don't get sweaty.
