Q: How do you use this? I don't understand how it works for weeding without cutting the plants you're weeding around. I wish there was a video.

The Nejiri is a scraper. It cuts shallow weeds like shotweed or chickweed. It's easy to use around perennials, annuals. Easy to control.

Q: It is strong enough to cut small vines?

Like so many other things is life, it depends on what you mean by small. It should cut most any vine that is 1/8 inch in diameter or less although I am not sure it was designed as a cutting tool. I use mine to remove weed seedlings by pulling the blade across the weed seedlings. To cut vines, I use shears suited for the vine size. Based on my experience, the hoe will always have a spot in my garden tool bag.

Q: Can the blade be sharpened?

I have sharpened mine with a knife sharpener.

Q: is the blade welded to the shaft or one piece of metal with a flattened blade?

It's welded. Not a problem, in my opinion. I use it to scrape the ground when weeding and sometimes to chop a little.
