Is the timer one you need to manually press every time you switch it on or can it be set to say, 3 hrs, and a plug timer set to turn on at 4am?

You have to plug in for power the you have three different timer settings of which have to be set then, from one to six hours on time. After the set tone the heat activates and then turns off. They are brilliant for drying my work boots in the winter.

How much electric do they use

Not much! It’s the same as a 20watt bulb. If you ran it all day (24hrs) it would only cost 7p. Obviously electric charges are about to double so run all day and it might cost 14pence

Would these work for ice hockey/boxing/MMA gloves?

I dont see why not, but they are quite long. That said they are very good
