very interesting and easy to read book
i work as a free lance fashion editor thus i make a sort of fashion library at home) and i love this book! it is very systematized and easy to read. sometimes you think a piece of clothes becomes popular this very season and then you read the entry and find out that it's been invented long ago and at least some 50 yrs have past since smb famous made it popular, it is not about today's fashion. highly recommend!!!

OK for a teen or adult without much fashion knowledge
I bought two copies, one for myself and one for a young teen who is a budding fashionista. The target audience appears to be a teen or young adult who is just starting to dig deeper for fashion knowledge beyond the occasional magazine. It provides some helpful definitions and descriptions for clothing including dress and neckline shapes, but anyone with a deeper knowledge of sewing or fashion will catch several factual errors. As a first book for a younger teen this might spark an interest in learning more about fashion or sewing, but I do not agree that a true design student will find it helpful. There are many other reference books that would provide the serious student of fashion more content for their money and waste less space trying to be hip and current. I would recommend home sewers or design students save their money for Threads or Burda magazine subscriptions where they will gain excellent tips on techniques, inspirational articles and/or patterns to actually sew and modify in every issue (Burda World of Fashion or Burda Plus).

Fabulous!
I received this book as a present along with a dress form, and I was very happy. This book has everything in it you need to know about fashion. From dresses to types of socks, and as detailed as who made it popular and when. It's a great product, and was delivered in great condition! Very happy with the Fashion 101: A Crash Course in Clothing, and will be glad to order from this seller again!

Aimed at 13 year olds, but style recommendations I wouldn't want for a 13 year old.
The Industry reviews for this book do state it is for ages 12 and up and for grades 9-12. I wish I had paid attention to that. The title is appropriate. It is only a crash course. There is a little bit about how the item came about, what it is and who in the past century might have been known to wear it--usually referencing mid to late 1990's actresses and musicians. The last paragraph per item is about "How to Rock It" or how to wear or style the item. This is also mostly a mid-to-late 90's style. All the paragraphs together made me confused about who the audience is for the book. The book was published in 2008. Current 13 year olds would find the 90's references to be dated. The other references were mostly for 1940s, 50s, and 60s actresses who I doubt the majority of 13 year olds would know. The part about "How to Rock It" (that title alone seems dated) was either very plain and obvious or inappropriate for a 13 year old--for instance, wear a "wifebeater" tank top with a black or colored bra underneath. The illustrations are bad. This makes sense when you learn its the illustrator's first professional project. The illustrations are not consistent and are either line drawings, colored pencil, or filled in with a single color or pattern with strange white areas that make no sense to the garment. Worse yet, the illustrator made "pull lines" which are the folds in a garment or pulling areas which indicate a poor fit on a body. What a great way to give a 13 year old the wrong impression of how a garment should fit.Overall I wouldn't recommend this for a 13 year old and it is too young for a person over 18. The writer should have picked an audience and stuck with them. Either make it for 13 year olds and don't make dated references (and get a better illustrator), or make it appropriate for people over 18 and include information about different aspects of clothing (hems, sleeves, necklines, waists etc), and more information about history.

It is ok but would reccoment FLATTER YOUR FIGURE anyday over this
It is ok but would recommend FLATTER YOUR FIGURE any day over this or one of the "Color me Perfect" books. Also, IF you can find it, the best book EVER written about this is "TRIUMPH of INDIVIDUAL STYLE", which has not been published for a very long time. I found a new one for $25 years ago and have misplaced it. Just bought a used one here on Amazon for $20 but I got really, really lucky because they sell now for over a hundred at least. I would NEVER spend that much, just keep checking back and you will find it. I might spend $50 if in excellent shape, or go to your library.

Ehh...ok
This book as decent, it's great if you're looking to know types of pants or types of collars, but I was hoping to learn more. Most of it consisted of things anyone would know. A platform shoe, a sports bra, a vest. Simple articles of clothing people wear all the time made this book very generic and not very imformative to someone aspiring to learn more about fashion and what makes it work. However, the one feature I loved was where it described who made it to begin with, and who made it hot. If you're looking for fashion history this book could be quite useful. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for.
