A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future

Sir David Attenborough, in this witness statement, takes the reader through the worst case scenario, a world where we humans have destroyed the very foundations we depend upon for existence, to a vision of sustainable harmony with our planet. His research is impeccable and his examples to the point. His vast experiences lend solid credence to every fact and theory he discusses. Aside from a few unfortunate proofreading errors, this book is engaging from the first paragraph to its conclusion. I cannot imagine anyone reading this book and not coming away changed. Thank you Sir David, for a fine Statement and a wonderful life of service to our planet.

This book is an interesting, easy read and makes the climate emergency easy to comprehend as well as the steps that we need to take to reverse climate damage and live well on the earth.The shipping was a problem, ironically the book arrived in a cardboard box that was way too large for the book, causing damage to the cover when the book bounced around in the box. Amazon could do a much better job! This could have been sent in smaller box or padded paper envelope and arrived with less of a carbon footprint and undamaged.

The first part sets the stage for how we got where we are.We de-wild the earth and thus reduced both carbon sinks and animal diversityNow he thinks we have the tools to avoid our own extinction. I think he’s ever the optimist!

A great conservationist puts the world in perspective and what we can do to save Planet Earth. Enjoyable read on a complex topic.

It is impossible to imagine there is anyone currently living other than Sir David who could provide us all with his observations of our world as he does. I have recommended this book to many, their reactions, almost universally are that it must be rather depressing. That fact alone means that there is a general feeling amongst human kind that the planet is facing a potential catastrophe. Anyone alive today with a brain must know this but if you want a balanced, learned and utterly pragmatic summary of what needs to be done, then this book has to be the reference for us all.

This was an easy read, but very sobering. I was glad to find there's a name for something I knew existed, but had no words for - shifting baseline syndrome. The idea that everyone sees things through the prism of their own lifetime, and what they experienced as children becomes their baseline 'normal' of how they think the world should be. The problem being that what was 'normal' in your childhood, is not the same as the 'normal' in your parents, grandparents etc childhoods. Which is one difficulty in making the urgency of stopping the damage we're doing to the planet, harder to impress on people.Another book I would highly recommend to anyone interested in this general topic is "A Buzz in the Meadow" by Dave Goulson

Everyone should read this book, it's very interesting and tells what will happen to humanity if we don't change the way we treat our planet.

The BBC commentator seems to have awaken to the most dangerous animal in the jungle. Us.A recent trip to Hawaii confirms to me the destruction of the reefs and the vanishing reef fish.The scale of the "die offs" around us is catalogued in this book.It doesn't look good.

Book is very nice, made of ecological material. Content is eye opening, its a book everyone should read

This beautifully written book is split into three sections - the first, an account of Attenborough's packed life and his growing awareness of the impending threat of climate change; the second an alarming report on the impact climate change is already having on the world and the urgent need to address this; and thirdly, an optimistic assessment of the technologies and strategies needed to address the issue - many of which are already things all of us can do with little effort - eating less meat, for example. The book is a clarion call for nations to pull together to create global solutions to halt, and perhaps even reverse, the damage that has already been caused by climate change.The book is accessible, balanced in perspective, thoughtful, enjoyable to read, and short - it can easily be read in one or two days. I would urge everyone to read it in order to get an understanding of the challenges that everyone will have to deal with during the course of the 21st century.
