Patience paid off--totally clogged kitchen drain.
This stuff works...but may take a bit longer for some really stubborn clogs. I had used a couple other products and my kitchen sink would not drain. Also tried using a plunger. Oy. Did not work. Frustration mounting...I had never heard of using lye to clear a drain. I read a ton of the tips and helpful reviews (good and bad) before buying this. I had to make a "smart" purchase because I can NOT afford a plumber. So I ordered this.I used the recommended amount, but mixed it with lukewarm (not cold) water and poured it into the drain. Waited the recommended time and poured water into the drain...then more water...then, it was still clogged. Since I am dirt poor and can't afford a plumber, I waited a day and went through the steps again. Same thing. Did not clear the clog. BUT...I decided to wait and see if I could save up the $$ to hire a plumber. I had to use the bathroom sink (the lye worked in that sink--it was running slow) to wash dishes (thankfully it is just me, so I don't have many dishes).Meanwhile...back at the kitchen sink about a couple weeks in, I ran some water to get a drink. Lo and behold! The drain was unclogged!!!! Totally UNCLOGGED!! I don't know for sure what day this happened, but I was doin' a happy dance! So if this doesn't work for your stubborn, totally clogged drain, don't give up! It must have been working that whole time unclogging my kitchen drain. Maybe it's a good thing that I had to wait to save up money for a plumber? :)It is still unclogged to this day. And this means a lot too, because it would clog up frequently, but no longer does! About once a month I use a couple teaspoons in the drain with a bit of warm water, then run regular cold water 30 minutes or so later to ensure it is running as it should. It is well worth the pennies a month for the peace of mind in this 1lb container of magic.

100% lye; works for soap making; ***MIX OUTSIDE***
i used this to make soap. it is 100% lye. a lot of reviews/recipes "suggest" mixing the lye "carefully and with plenty of ventilation" so as not to breathe in fumes-- this is nonsense. MIX THE LYE AND WATER OUTSIDE!!!!!!!do. not. mix. indoors. regardless. of. ventilation.you can literally see fumes rising from the mixture; i strongly suggest an allergy mask type thing, holding your breath as much as possible, and wearing eye protection. i did all of these things (minus eye protection; i wear glasses and didn't think it would be necessary) and found myself still smelling/inhaling a bit of the fumes with slightly sting-y eyes.yes, works for soap making as it is 100% lye. mix outdoors with breathing/eye protection.

and this stuff worked much better than anything else
Skip the Drano/Liquid Plumr and just get a bottle of this. Most of the marketed drain cleaners have below 10% sodium hydroxide, which is the main ingredient that breaks down clogs. This is the pure stuff, 100% uncut lye. Just a couple tablespoons and then a little cold water in a slow moving drain will clear it right up. Had a drain that was not responding well to most of the other treatments (tried drano, baking soda + vinegar, and borax + hot water, all separated by a few days), and this stuff worked much better than anything else. Just be very careful with the powder, as it is very caustic.

Perfect for soap making
This is the lye I use when I teach classes on homemade soap. The crystals are small and it dissolves nicely. It's pure lye, not full of other additives, so I never have to worry the soap will go bad or have unpredictable results when dyes are added.
