Limited use but I love it.
I chose to purchase this item for the tiny mandolin not the microplane. This tool has a track on the slicer side that holds your food securely and protects your fingers while slicing very small things. Like garlic and ginger. The thin, even slices are prefect for topping focaccia or pizza. You can grate softer things like citrus zest or ginger on the microplane side but I wouldn’t use it for something like nutmeg. This tool has limited use but for me it’s worth the space in my kitchen. I can get the job done quickly with consistent results and I love it. If you are looking for a good all around microplane this isn’t the product you want.

Works well
I ordered to replace my old Joseph, Joseph slicer. I use it to cut halved baby carrots and get perfect round carrot slices. I fill the holder for the carrots practically full, not jammed in, and all about the same height. I press hard and get slices for salad, the dog (who loves and gets slices in her dinner), and any other use I have for carrots. I do clear any remaining slices that stick under the holder each time I add new carrots. Carrots are hard vegetables; eventually it gets so the moving section "jumps the track". I can replace it for a while until it jumps off every swipe. Usually that is several months of frequent use. I did try the generic one that looks identical. Do not be fooled. That one jumped the track and came apart on the first carrots I tried. I especially like that my fingers never have to come close to the blade and the holder works just fine when the carrot pieces are filling that area, but not crammed in tightly. Too few will turn over and give you longer almost oval with 1 flat side pieces. I have grated nothing, so cannot speak to that part of the utensil. The Joseph model is easy to clean and has a piece to cover the blades when stored. I recommend.

No microplaner finger protection!
Caution: This item is NOT what most of you think it is!Having bled all over my garlic one too many times from using the normal microplaner, and not impressed with garlic presses, I began searching for something that would cut up garlic and ginger quickly and easily and bloodlessly.I originally bought a poor piece of useless plastic called "multifunctional microplaner..." but that was just a lie. It was a non-sharp grater that didn't work at all. Then I came across this microplaner! I was so excited to find the microplaner rather than the grater, that I bought it without reading the reviews. See? Just drop the garlic clove in the hopper and all your fingers are safe! Yay!NOPE. Not even. But the pictures looked so perfect for what I wanted that I stupidly didn't read the comments and reviews!!! What's this world coming to?This small device may slice radishes perfectly, as shown in the pictures, but I don't like or eat radishes. What I do like is tiny little pieces of garlic and ginger. This item does not make tiny little pieces of garlic and ginger any better than my normal microplaner. It is potentially awesome, but ends up totally wrong. As you've read by now, there is no finger guard for the microplaner side. This device is no safer for making garlic or ginger than the normal microplaner.I love the size and shape and it has such great potential. It could be fixed by a number of seemingly simple manufacturing tweaks - two I instantly thought of are 1) make the blade itself removable/reversible so you could turn it flip it and still use the guard, or put a guard groove on the other side so that you can move the guard back and forth to either side as needed. So, I'm still looking for the perfect garlic/ginger tiny piece maker.Sorry for the long useless venting review, but it seems like it is getting easier and easier for Amazon to fool me, or of course, maybe I am just getting stupider and stupider. :O

Great for slicing--not for grating
I purchased this hoping it would grate ginger without grating my fingers. But it does not grate well. I ended up chopping the ginger with a knife. Tried using it for zesting an orange. No luck. It seems that the sharper side of the grater is on the back where the finger guard isn't. Even trying to use that side without the guard doesn't work well. It is great for slicing garlic, though--and for that I'll keep it.

While visiting our daughter she made delicious garlic pasta using this little de ice to slice the garlic, it was delicious! When I got home I ordered me one.
