And That's Why She's My Mama: Positive Affirmations Edition

I found this book on a list of transracial-adoption-related children's books. We adopted my son at birth two years ago, and he calls me Mama, so it seemed appropriate (he calls this book "Mama book"). The writing is not out of the ordinary, "...Mama's there to kiss my boo-boos..." but the illustrations show women and children of different races, abilities, and ages. There's a woman with gray hair and a cane sending a little boy off to school, a black woman helping a white girl in a wheelchair with homework, etc. In my case, the "reader's Mama" is his mother (me), but I can definitely see where other mother figures would self identify as well. I agree with a previous reviewer that a couple of the verses are clunky, but it doesn't take away from the message that Mamas are diverse, but they are alike in their acts of love.

I love this fun, rhyming, and INCLUSIVE story for my foster daughter! It helps me teach her at a super young age that kids and parents and families come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. In group settings like school and daycare kids can so easily learn to be mean or even just dismissive of other kids who aren’t exactly like them, and this book is great for normalizing lots of different types of kids and families! And my little one loves the rhyming and of course the million references to “mama.” Awesome book for anyone, whether it’s a foster or adopted kid, a kid who is differently abled, a kid in a mixed-race family, or a kid you want to teach to be kind to and inclusive of others - and the illustrations are amazing!

This is not a story; more like a show and tell. A book for the younger kids, each page shows different adoptive moms with their kids. Their skin colors don't match, but the love bestowed and returned by the kids does. We see that love shared is what turns these moms and kids into families. We see moms helping with a school project, taking care of a sick child, and pairs having fun together. It's only on the last page that the author mentions they may look different. This is for the many diverse adoptive parents wanting to reassure their kids. Also, your kids will be able to tell the story on their own with the friendly pictures. Just one caveat: the words are not spaced to promote the rhyming. So, just be on the lookout. It sounds better when you give the narration some cadence.

This book was exactly what I was looking for when needing a book to help my 3 year old niece. After my brother died, she began living with us and she wanted to call me 'mama.' This book helped a confusing situation for her. The newer book is even more beautiful with great positive affirmations. It's one of my niece's (now 4 1/2) favorite books!

Very cute book, but several of the pages were written on or torn. I didn't see it listed as used anywhere in the listing.

Kids and adults alike have a lot of questions and puzzled looks when our kids don't look just like us. They ask kids questions that can sometimes be a reminder that they are different and this can be confusing for kids. This book shows how being a mom isn't about how we look but what a mom does and feels for a kiddo that makes her a mom. My foster girls ages 5 and 6 could really relate and made the connections that our family looks different but I am still MOM for them every day and will always love them.

I liked everything about this story. The pictures and the at the words rhymed were phenomenal. The message behind the story was very clear and strong to me. No matter how families look and mothers look their love is the same. I absolutely love it . The author is a good friend of mine and excellent mom. But no bias because I know her the book stands on it's own. I love it .

I was expecting a story about adoption and was dissapointed. The quality of this book isn't great. It talks about the different things moms do and shows a lot of different looking families. But that was all. It was very basic. Like a book you would read to a 1 year old. Adoption is not discussed at all.

Great for non tradition families. My boys liked it and have reread it to each other often. Reread by 8 year old, but enjoyed by both a 3 & an 8 year old. 4/5 because I remember it bring being hood, but not FANTASTIC. Not sure if I would buy it for my nrices & nephews (that would be a 5 star).

'And that's why she's my mama' I got this book yesterday. Nothing special about it, as it describes the various roles a mum plays, but the picture illustrations are good. Shows the diversity and also a mum doing all those things which most of the books show dad helping with. So, I feel, a good little book for single moms. Introduces the concept of mumma kid family, without saying anything. Should be good for young toddlers.

The book has cheap black n white paper inside. It's a copy of the original. Very disappointed with the quality and the price paid.

This book has such a wonderful message. As the father of a biracial child, I feel it is important to teach my kid about diversity. I would recommend this book for that purpose.
