Ok, maybe I'm missing something... Can't I just use a large food storage container and heat in the microwave? Is there something special about this?

Nope, not this effectively because it has much thicker walls than storage containers so it retains heat wonderfully, especially if you actually warm it up IN the warmer. I use this in my restaurant, torts can sit on the assembly line for over an hour and still be warm in this and we tried other containers first and they were cold in minutes.

Will this warmer also keep the Tortillia fresh enough to store them in it?

I keep mine in their package in the warmer.

I would say it is a plastic... it is very sturdy and does a great job in our microwave. If you have ever been served tortillas in a container in a Mexican restaurant it is like that container... as Dianne indicates... use in the microwave only
