Mastering the Art of War: Commentaries on Sun Tzu's Classic (Shambhala Dragon Editions)

I must confess, I was ignorant that any of the great warlord Zhuge Liang's work still existed today. Imagine my surprise then, in typing the name into Amazon and coming up with this work. Needless to say, the price was right, and so I ordered it.I was not disappointed! While I cannot say that Zhuge Liang did not lift his thoughts from another more ancient writer (I am certainly not the scholar of Chinese literature that I claim to be!), nonetheless, his thoughts are quite clear on the right (and more importantly, WRONG) ways of leading an army, and indeed, these words can be applied to other situations. In particular, pay attention to the essay "The virtues and faults of the great general", which I think is a lesson for ANY walk of life.Also, the writing of Liu Pi are collected here, but I must say that the reader probably wants familiarity with the intrigues of the "Three Kingdoms" at this point. Still, with so many nuggets of wisdom to be found, and at this price, you would be foolish not to pick this up, and three kingdom fans may also broaden their own knowledge.

Kongming and Liu Zi are masters of military strategy and societal knowledge in extension. So vast was their knowledge that even modern military stategy cannot surpass their skills.

I can see from the other reviews of this book that those who rated it poorly had a basic misunderstanding of what they were reading. It seems that several folks were under the impression that they were reading Sun Tzu's " The Art Of War".You WILL find differences between Sun Tzu's book And Zhuge Liang's. Zhuge Liang was quite a different person than Sun Tzu. For insights into what kind of a person, you should read Chronicles of the three Kingdoms and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. You'll find that Zhuge Liang does not enjoy war quite as much as Sun Tzu but he is just as good at it(I'd say Better).

This book, on the Art of War, has touched on every detail of different tactics that were used during some of the chaotic periods of ancient China. This is an excellent book to applied on military and in everyday life. This book has not only explained the genius of behind winning with intelligent, but also touched on different psychological states to determine a winning or losing battle. Of course, we are living in an era of consumerism, which driven the economic forces for stability and social order, and everyone wants a piece of market to make a great fortune. Therefore, this is one of the best books that can definitely applied to making that fortune in this market-economic-social-structure!

A commonly forgotten genius of war. Zhuge Liang has a mastery as a field general that no student of war is complete without.

The "Art of War," attributed to Sun Tzu is probably the classic piece of writing about the different aspects involved in that convoluted activity we call "war." Thomas Cleary, admittedly not one of my favorite translators, does an excellent job of bringing the various aspects of this socio-political endeavor together. Even for those who are quite familiar with the original work could benefit from a reading of this very readable book.

In college I was named captain of the football team, a position I was in all honesty not ready for. I came across the Art of War in a book store and it became my manual for leadership. It became a big part of the foundation of my manhood.

The content of the information is powerful

The book is well written and edited from the preface to the end. The concept expressed are interesting and very consistent. It's a must for everyone who has the will to study ancient philosophy and has the patience to learn from it
