They have the identical design on the back. The shade of the "C" might be slightly lighter in bright light, but not so noticeable. If you just randomize beforehand and stack or use a draw bag, it completely gets around any potential issues. Hasn't affected our games in any way and we mixed old and new tiles.

Yes you do need the original board for this game. The expansion is not enough pieces to play on its own. I'd recommend starting with the original board game first before adding the addition play this expansion gives you.
